Coinbase Data Breach: 69,000 Customers Affected

Coinbase Data Breach Impacts Nearly 70,000 Customers

Coinbase has reported that a significant data breach compromised the personal and financial details of at least 69,461 customers.

This disclosure was made in a filing with the attorney general of Maine on Wednesday, fulfilling the requirements of the state’s data breach notification legislation.

Breach Timeline and Details

The security incident spanned from December 26, 2024, and persisted until earlier this month. It was then that Coinbase received a ransom demand from the perpetrator.

According to a blog post published by the company, the hacker requested a $20 million ransom in exchange for deleting the stolen data. Coinbase made the decision not to comply with this demand.

The breach was facilitated through the compromise of Coinbase customer support personnel. The hacker reportedly bribed employees to gain unauthorized access to customer information over several months.

Types of Data Compromised

A wide range of sensitive customer data was exposed during the incident. This included:

  • Customer names
  • Email addresses
  • Postal addresses
  • Phone numbers
  • Government-issued identification documents
  • Account balances
  • Transaction histories

Concerns have been raised regarding the potential targeting of high-net-worth customers due to the nature of the stolen information.

The company is actively investigating the incident and working to enhance its security measures to prevent future breaches.
