A New Approach to Remote Assistance: Cohere Secures $3.1 Million in Seed Funding

Traditional remote desktop applications, such as LogMeIn and TeamViewer, are often perceived as complex and outdated. A recently funded startup, Cohere, is aiming to revolutionize the remote desktop and screen-sharing landscape. The company’s technology empowers businesses to provide immediate customer support by gaining instant screen control, all without requiring any downloads or initial configuration from the customer.

Early Adoption and Key Clients

This streamlined user experience has already attracted over 50 paying customers to Cohere. Notable clients include Canix, a TechCrunch Disrupt 2020 winner, alongside CopyAI, Ramp, and others. Furthermore, the company has secured its first enterprise-level agreement with Podium.

Founding and Origins

Cohere’s founders – Yunyu Lin, Jason Wang, and Rahul Sengottuvelu – initially connected while students at Duke University. Lin briefly pursued a role at the corporate card company Ramp before the others completed their studies during the pandemic.

The concept for Cohere originated during a remote work-focused hackathon held amidst the pandemic. The team’s success in the event led them to further develop their project through the Y Combinator accelerator program.

Simplifying Customer Support

Cohere is fundamentally designed to facilitate easier issue resolution for teams of all sizes. Rather than mandating software downloads or intricate installation procedures, customers simply click a button on a website to grant remote screen access. This efficiency reduces support times, eliminating the need for extensive questioning about the customer’s screen or navigation instructions – support personnel can directly interact with the user’s interface.

“The system allows support staff to view a customer’s screen instantaneously, without any prior setup,” explains Sengottuvelu. “It replicates the experience of being physically present alongside the user.”

A key differentiator for Cohere is its focus on web applications. Unlike comprehensive remote desktop solutions, Cohere only forwards the content of the specific web page the user is currently viewing. This means developers can observe user interactions within their own website, but cannot access other tabs or explore the user’s computer beyond the browser.

“Our approach differs from traditional screen sharing, which captures and transmits a pixel-by-pixel image of the screen 60 times per second,” clarifies Lin.

Underlying Technology

The startup’s technology centers around capturing the state of the web page – essentially, a snapshot of the Document Object Model (DOM). Utilizing technologies like MutationObservers and WebSockets, Cohere enables real-time updates to reflect changes on the web page. The platform is engineered to be compatible with a wide array of web technologies and frameworks, including React, Iframe, Canvas, Vue, Angular, and more, with plans for continued expansion.

“We capture the page’s content directly,” states Lin. “This allows us to filter out sensitive data, such as credit card details, passwords, or Social Security numbers – protecting personally identifiable information.”

Remote access is only initiated with the user’s explicit consent, and users retain the ability to terminate the session at any time via a prominent “X” button.

Cohere also prioritizes security, maintaining SOC 2 Type 1, GDPR, and CCPA compliance.

Platform Compatibility and Integrations

Currently, Cohere functions seamlessly across desktop and mobile browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. The platform is designed for integration with existing business tools such as Zendesk, Slack, Salesforce, and Intercom, with further integrations planned.

Cohere Replay: A Unique Feature

While competing with established remote desktop solutions, Cohere introduces a novel feature called Cohere Replay. This allows businesses to retrospectively review customer sessions, providing valuable insights into user behavior.

Due to its focus on web applications, Cohere is particularly well-suited for customer support and user onboarding. Early-stage startups have also leveraged the platform to gather real-time feedback during product demonstrations and observe how customers interact with their offerings.

The paid service is offered at $49 per user per month, with a discounted rate of $39 for larger teams.

Funding and Future Plans

Cohere launched approximately seven months ago, during its participation in the Y Combinator program.

The company has now secured $3.1 million in seed funding, led by Initialized Capital. Additional investors include Y Combinator, BoxGroup, Soma Capital, Shrug Capital, Chapter One, and a group of angel investors including Zach Perret, Elad Gil, Naval Ravikant, Eric Wu, Prasanna Sankaranarayanan, Eric Glyman, Jack Altman, Todd Goldberg, Rahul Vohra, Karim Atiyeh, Vivek Sodera, Dan Romero, Shrav Mehta and Oscar Hong.

Based in New York, Cohere’s three co-founders will utilize the new funding to expand their teams in sales, engineering, and product development. They also intend to invest in building out their enterprise sales process and broadening the platform’s integrations and use cases.
