Understanding Complex Codebases: CodeSee Launches OSS Port

As coding projects expand in size and team membership grows, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the project's overall structure becomes increasingly difficult, particularly for geographically dispersed teams. To address this challenge, CodeSee, a nascent startup focused on code comprehension, has unveiled OSS Port, an open-source initiative aimed at assisting distributed open-source teams in achieving clarity.

Seed Funding Announcement

Alongside the launch of OSS Port, CodeSee disclosed a previously unannounced $3 million seed funding round secured last year. The investment was co-led by Boldstart Ventures and Uncork Capital, with additional participation from DCVC, Precursor Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, and a number of individual investors.

CodeSee's Core Mission

The primary objective of CodeSee is to provide tools that enable companies to visualize and comprehend their code effectively. This need has become more critical due to the escalating volume of code and the increasing number of developers involved in projects. “CodeSee functions as a developer tool designed to facilitate deep understanding of code functionality for both developers and teams,” explained Shanea Leven, CEO and co-founder alongside her husband, CTO Josh Leven.

The Rationale Behind OSS Port

Leven explained that the creation of an open-source product stemmed from a recognized need within open-source projects. These projects often involve a diverse range of developers, with frequent onboarding of new contributors, making a holistic grasp of the codebase essential. She posits that successful implementation within open-source environments will serve as a valuable proof of concept for the commercial iteration of their product.

Leveraging Past Experience

Drawing upon over a decade of product management experience at companies such as Docker and Cloudflare, Leven has witnessed the consequences of engineering teams lacking a clear understanding of interconnected code components. Such disconnects have, in some instances, resulted in missed release deadlines. This observation fueled her determination to establish a company dedicated to resolving this issue.

Ed Sim, managing partner at Boldstart Ventures, identifies the ability to understand a codebase as a crucial, yet often overlooked, element in the development lifecycle. He believes this capability can significantly contribute to engineering talent retention. Engineers are statistically more likely to seek new opportunities after a year if they struggle to master the codebase.

The Potential for Value Creation

“A product that accelerates codebase mastery and introduces a visual approach holds the potential to unlock substantial value and expedite the delivery of higher-quality code,” Sim stated. “Shanea convincingly demonstrated this potential to us.”

Building an Inclusive Company Culture

Over the past 18 months, Leven and her husband have grown the company to a team of 10 employees. As a Black female CEO, Leven emphasizes the importance of fostering a welcoming and inclusive company culture, shaped by her own experiences. “Having been involved in numerous startups, I believe one of the greatest benefits of being a CEO is the opportunity to cultivate the inclusive environment I’ve always desired,” she shared.

Diversity and Inclusion as Core Values

Leven clarified that while the company is continually striving for improvement, diversity and inclusion are not treated as separate initiatives. “We view culture as an integral and essential aspect of our daily operations, not as a distinct entity. Diversity and inclusion are fundamentally woven into the fabric of our company,” she explained.

Future Growth and Workplace Considerations

Despite operating remotely during the pandemic, Leven is actively considering the company’s future workplace strategy as it expands. She is exploring the possibility of establishing local hubs in areas with a concentration of employees.

“We are evaluating alternative hub models and will make decisions collaboratively as a team, prioritizing the well-being of our employees and awaiting broader vaccine availability for children,” she concluded.
