CNN+ Streaming Service Launching in 2022

CNN Launches New Streaming Service: CNN+
Reports regarding a CNN streaming platform have been confirmed. The network has officially announced CNN+, a service designed to deliver a combination of live and on-demand programming that is “separate and distinct” from its traditional television broadcasts.
Launch Details and Pricing
The debut of CNN+ is scheduled for some point during the first three months of 2022. While the exact subscription cost remains undefined, CNN lead executive Andrew Morse indicated to Variety that an ad-supported tier will not be available at the initial launch.
Live Programming and Interactive Features
Live content will form the core of the CNN+ experience. The service intends to provide eight to twelve hours of detailed coverage of current events and “lifestyle” programming daily.
This programming will feature both established CNN personalities and new faces. Viewers will also be given opportunities to engage in real-time discussions with anchors and subject matter experts. The service aims to offer a unique experience, diverging from CNN’s standard news presentation.
On-Demand Content Library
The on-demand section of CNN+ will draw from CNN’s existing content library. Popular shows such as Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown and United Shades of America will be available.
Original series and films are planned specifically for the streaming service, though details will not be revealed until later in 2021.
Potential Bundling with Other Services
According to official statements from Morse, CNN+ will not initially be bundled with HBO Max. However, sources speaking to Variety suggest a “strong probability” of future bundling with HBO Max and Discovery+ following the completion of the WarnerMedia and Discovery merger.
A Significant Step for CNN
Morse described the CNN+ launch as the most substantial undertaking for the network since its television service began in June 1980. He also highlighted the opportunity to explore programming formats that blend news and entertainment.
Challenges and Viewer Adoption
The success of CNN+ hinges on attracting subscribers. CNN has previously found success with long-form content, exemplified by the late Anthony Bourdain’s programs.
However, it remains uncertain whether audiences are willing to pay a monthly fee for access to this type of content. The increasingly crowded streaming market also presents a challenge, as consumers may be hesitant to add another subscription service.
