Clubhouse Introduces Direct Messaging with “Backchannel”

Direct messaging functionality has been anticipated for Clubhouse, and the feature has now been implemented. This addition enhances the audio-focused application with a text-based communication option.

A New Way to Connect

Clubhouse’s newly launched direct messaging system, termed “Backchannel,” provides users with a frequently requested method for initiating private conversations within the social audio platform.

Enhanced Utility and Coordination

Backchannel facilitates both individual one-on-one messaging and group chats. This significantly expands the utility of the voice-centric social network.

Room moderators and speakers can utilize the messaging feature for pre-event organization or real-time coordination during live sessions.

Facilitating Listener Engagement

The system also allows for the acceptance of text-based questions, potentially offering a more comfortable avenue for audience participation.

Current Capabilities and Future Updates

Currently, Clubhouse users are able to share links via Backchannel, though image and video sharing are not yet supported. However, further feature enhancements are reportedly in development.

Managing Incoming Messages

A dedicated message request area is included within the system. This area houses communications from unfamiliar users until explicitly approved, ensuring user control over their interactions.

The initial focus of Clubhouse’s DMs is on fostering connections with existing acquaintances or individuals users wish to connect with.

Voice Remains Central

Without a room-wide text chat option currently available, the primary focus of interaction will continue to be centered around voice-based rooms.

Availability and Access

The messaging system is now live on both the iOS and Android versions of the Clubhouse application.

To initiate a direct message – or a “Backchannel” conversation – users can locate the paper airplane icon on a user’s profile or swipe right from the main menu.

Important Note on Message Management

Currently, the ability to delete messages is not available within Backchannel (though copying and reporting options are present). Therefore, users should exercise caution and consider the content of their messages carefully.
