Clubhouse Expands Language Support

The voice-based social media platform, Clubhouse, has significantly broadened its reach by incorporating support for thirteen additional languages. This expansion was revealed during a press event held in India, aiming to enhance accessibility for users who prefer interacting with the platform in their native tongues.

This update introduces localized experiences for a substantial user base who either do not utilize English or actively seek alternatives in their preferred languages.

New Languages Added

The newly integrated languages encompass a diverse range of global communities. They include French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Malayalam, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, Tamil, and Telugu.

Interestingly, the selection does not include four of the world’s ten most widely spoken languages: Chinese, Arabic, Bengali, and Russian.

Android-First Rollout

Initially, these language options will be implemented within the Android version of the application. This strategic decision is rooted in user demographics.

Data from Statcounter indicates that over 96% of mobile users in India operate on the Android platform, with iOS holding a considerably smaller market share of approximately 3%. This Android-centric approach reflects a pragmatic response to user habits.

The prioritization of Android is particularly noteworthy, considering the previous delay in releasing an Android version of the app.

Company Perspective

A Clubhouse PR representative communicated to TechCrunch that the company was “amazed” by the platform’s global adoption despite its initial English-only limitation.

This sentiment underscores the platform’s potential for growth with increased linguistic accessibility.

New App Icon

Alongside the language expansion, Clubhouse unveiled a redesigned app icon. The new design features Anirudh Deshmukh, a musician, singer, and songwriter.

Based in Mumbai, Anirudh began using Clubhouse earlier this year and quickly established a thriving community with his “Late Night Jam” show, now boasting over 72,000 members within his dedicated club, Anirudh.

The icon change represents a visual refresh and celebrates a prominent member of the Clubhouse community.
