Creating Cinemagraphs: Movies, Timelines & QuickMasks
Begin by opening a video file, much like you would open any other type of file. Should the animation window not automatically appear, activate it through the Windows menu. For this example, a short video recorded on an iPhone of a squirrel in St James Park, London, will be utilized.
Locate the animation dropdown menu icon situated in the timeline’s upper right corner, as it will be frequently used. Clicking this menu reveals Document Settings. Reduce the frame rate to approximately 15 frames per second if it currently exceeds this value. Videos often begin with a frame rate of around 30 fps, which is generally too high for straightforward animations.
Familiarize yourself with the timeline’s functionality. A blue pointer positioned along the top of the timeline indicates the current frame within the sequence. Dragging this pointer allows you to navigate forward and backward through the video footage. Playback controls are also available in the bottom right corner.
Position the pointer at the desired starting point of your movie. Subsequently, move the blue rectangle representing the movie’s start to align with the pointer’s location. Holding the shift key during this process ensures precise snapping to the pointer. Initiating playback should now commence the movie from the newly designated starting point.
Adjust the marker to indicate the desired end point of the movie, and repeat the process with the small blue end marker on the right side. Previewing the timeline again will demonstrate the basic looping of your movie. If satisfied, select Trim Document Duration to Work Area from the timeline menu in the top right.

Exporting the Animation
Begin by accessing the animation menu once more and choosing the Flatten Frames Into Layers option. This action will generate multiple layers, with each layer representing a single frame of the animation.
Subsequently, remove the initial keyframe image and the movie layer, retaining only the animation frame layers that were just created.
The next step involves converting the movie into a Frame Animation. Activate this conversion by clicking the designated button located in the lower-right corner of the animation timeline window.
Initially, only a single frame will be visible, but this is expected.
Return to the animation menu and select Make Frames From Layers. This process will transform all of your animation layers into individual frames.
