Change Internet Explorer Favorites Save Location

Relocating Your Internet Explorer Favorites Folder in Windows 7
The default storage location for Internet Explorer Favorites in Windows 7 is the C:\Users\[username]\Favorites directory. Users may desire a different location for improved backup procedures or to store them on a separate drive.
Changing the Favorites Folder Location via Folder Properties
It is possible to alter the location of your Internet Explorer Favorites folder directly through its properties. This method offers a user-friendly approach to customization.
To begin, navigate to the current Favorites folder. Right-click on the folder and select "Properties" from the context menu.
Within the Properties window, select the "Location" tab. Here, you can input the full path to your desired new folder location.
After entering the new path, click "Apply". Windows will then prompt you to move all existing files from the old location to the new one. Confirm this action to complete the process.
Modifying the Registry to Change the Favorites Folder Location
An alternative method for relocating the Internet Explorer Favorites folder involves directly editing the Windows Registry. This approach requires caution and a degree of technical proficiency.
Open the Registry Editor by pressing the Windows key + R, typing "regedit", and pressing Enter.
Navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Favorites
In the right pane, locate the value named "URL". Double-click on it to modify its value.
Change the data value to the full path of your desired new folder location. Ensure the path is accurate.
Close the Registry Editor. A restart of Internet Explorer, or potentially your computer, may be required for the changes to take effect.
Important Note: Incorrectly modifying the registry can cause system instability. It is highly recommended to back up the registry before making any changes.
Both methods detailed above allow for the successful relocation of your Internet Explorer Favorites folder in Windows 7, providing flexibility in data management and backup strategies.
Modifying the Properties of the Favorites Folder
To alter the storage location of your Favorites folder through its properties, begin by launching Windows Explorer. Navigate to the folder’s current location, which is typically the default path: C:\Users\[username]\Favorites.
Within the right pane, right-click on the Favorites folder. From the context menu that appears, select the Properties option.

In the Properties dialog box, click on the Location tab. Subsequently, click the Move button to initiate the location change.
It’s important to note that utilizing the Move button isn’t the sole method for altering the Favorites folder’s location. You can directly input the complete path to the desired new location into the provided edit box.

Should you choose to use the Move button, a Select a Destination dialog box will appear. Select the new location and then click Select Folder.

Confirm your changes by clicking OK, which will close the Properties dialog box.

If you manually entered a full path but the target folder doesn't yet exist, a confirmation dialog will be displayed. Select Yes to create the new folder.

A prompt will appear, asking if you wish to transfer all subfolders and saved links from the original Favorites location to the new one. It is highly recommended to move all files; therefore, click Yes.

Following the process, all folders and files previously located in the original Favorites location will now reside in the newly designated location.

Please be aware that if you assigned a name different from "Favorites" to the new folder, the display in Windows Explorer may still show "Favorites." However, clicking within the address bar will reveal the path reflecting the name you specified.

Modifying the Favorites Folder Location via the Registry
To alter where the Favorites folder is stored, access the registry by typing "regedit" (without quotation marks) into the Search field on the Start menu. From the search results, select regedit.exe or simply press Enter when it is highlighted.
Should the User Account Control dialog appear, confirm by clicking Yes to proceed.
Note: The appearance of this dialog is contingent upon your User Account Control configuration and may not always be visible.
Navigate to the following registry key located in the left pane:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
On the right side, locate and double-click the entry labeled "Favorites".
In the "Value data" field, input the complete file path to the desired new location for the Favorites folder. Then, click OK to save the changes.
Note: If you choose to modify the Favorites folder location through the registry, the new folder itself must be created manually.
Subsequently, navigate to this key, also found in the left pane:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Double-click the "Favorites" item on the right side. Enter the full path to the new Favorites folder location within the "Value data" field. Confirm your entry by clicking OK.
To exit the Registry Editor, select "Exit" from the File menu.
Note: When utilizing the registry method for relocating the Favorites folder, it is necessary to manually transfer all subfolders and files from the original Favorites location to the newly designated location.
