Cavela Secures $6.6M Funding to Reduce Manufacturing Costs

Cavela's AI-Powered Solution for Global Sourcing
In 2023, Anthony Sardain launched Cavela, an AI startup designed to streamline supplier sourcing for brands. He initially didn't anticipate the growing concern among clients regarding manufacturing in China due to emerging tariffs.
The Challenges of Supply Chain Diversification
Sardain explained to TechCrunch that establishing a new supply chain isn't a simple undertaking. Many brands rely on a single, long-term supplier, hesitant to risk losing a valuable partnership.
This challenge is particularly acute for small and midsize businesses lacking dedicated global sourcing teams. Cavela addresses this issue with its AI agents, autonomous software tools functioning as a dedicated procurement team.
How Cavela's AI Agents Operate
These agents are capable of identifying potential suppliers across more than 40 countries. They also manage the negotiation of product specifications and pricing details.
Recently, Cavela secured $6.6 million in seed funding, co-led by XYZ Venture Capital and Susa Ventures, with additional investment from Crossover Capital.
The Role of Generative AI in Automation
Sardain emphasizes that automating the supplier discovery and pricing negotiation process was previously impossible without the advancements in generative AI. The process is traditionally complex and time-intensive.
“Product development generates substantial amounts of text, images, diagrams, and sketches – data types that historically posed challenges for technology,” Sardain stated.
Leveraging LLMs and Image Models
Current Large Language Models (LLMs) and image recognition technologies enable brands to upload comprehensive product information directly into Cavela’s AI agent. This includes specifications, blueprints, and all relevant details.
Based on this information, the agent identifies numerous potential manufacturers and initiates contact via WhatsApp, email, or text message to assess production capabilities, lead times, and obtain pricing quotes.
A Streamlined Procurement Process
Cavela’s system eliminates the need for brands to engage in extensive back-and-forth communication. Brands receive quotes directly in their inbox within a few days.
Following this, companies typically request samples from a select group of suppliers to aid in the final factory selection.
Cost Savings and Efficiency Gains
Cavela estimates its customers experience significant time savings in their search for manufacturing partners, alongside an average reduction of 35% in production costs.
“Obtaining a large number of quotes increases the likelihood of securing a lower price and identifying a superior supplier,” Sardain explained.
Customer Success Stories
Clients like Western Welder Outfitting and The Longhairs have reported finding manufacturers through Cavela who offer significantly lower costs, even surpassing pre-tariff pricing levels.
Sardain's Background and Expertise
Anthony Sardain, formerly a data science lead at Tierra, draws upon three generations of family experience in trade and sourcing. His upbringing in Asian trade hubs – including Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, and China – provided him with valuable insights into local manufacturing practices.
Competitive Landscape
Cavela’s competitors include established platforms like Alibaba, which connects brands with manufacturers in China, and Pietra, another startup utilizing AI to assist businesses in sourcing goods.
