A security incident at Zoomcar, an Indian car-sharing marketplace, has resulted in the exposure of personal data belonging to at least 8.4 million customers.
Details of the Data Compromise
Compromised data includes customer names, phone numbers, and vehicle registration details. The breach was initially detected on June 9th, as reported in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Zoomcar became aware of the unauthorized access when several employees received communications from a threat actor asserting they had obtained access to the company’s data.
Incident Response Measures
Upon discovering the breach, Zoomcar immediately initiated its established incident response protocol.
The company has stated that, currently, there is no indication that financial information, passwords stored in plain text, or other highly sensitive identifiers were accessed during the incident.
Security Enhancements Implemented
In response to the security breach, Zoomcar has implemented enhanced security measures. These include additional safeguards for both cloud infrastructure and the internal network.
System monitoring has been increased, and access controls are currently under review. The company is also collaborating with external cybersecurity specialists.

Zoomcar has notified the relevant regulatory bodies and law enforcement agencies and is fully cooperating with their investigations.
As of now, it remains unclear whether affected customers have been directly informed about the data breach, or if any information regarding the identity of the hacker has been obtained.

Established in 2013, Zoomcar provides a platform for customers to rent vehicles on flexible terms – monthly, weekly, daily, or hourly.
The company currently operates in 99 cities, maintaining a fleet of over 25,000 cars and serving a user base exceeding 10 million individuals, according to its investor relations data.
Zoomcar’s operations extend beyond India, encompassing markets in Egypt, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
Financial Performance
In February, Zoomcar reported a 19% year-over-year increase in car rentals, totaling 103,599 bookings.
Contribution profit experienced a substantial increase, exceeding 500% to reach $1.28 million. However, the company’s net loss remained at $7.9 million.
Operational Status
Zoomcar has confirmed that, to date, the incident has not caused any significant disruption to its ongoing operations.
