Canoo Faces Financial Difficulties, Halts Production

Electric vehicle startup Canoo has announced a furlough of 82 employees and a temporary shutdown of its Oklahoma manufacturing facility. This action is being taken as the company seeks to secure additional funding to ensure its continued operation.

Leadership Changes and Legal Challenges

The recent announcement follows the resignation of board member James Chen. Furthermore, the company experienced the departure of its chief financial officer and general counsel approximately one month prior.

Canoo is currently involved in several legal disputes with suppliers. These lawsuits allege outstanding payments, adding to the company’s financial strain.

A Year of Restructuring

This latest round of furloughs represents the culmination of a challenging year for the EV manufacturer. Multiple workforce reductions and furloughs have already occurred.

The company previously closed its Los Angeles headquarters. Significant leadership changes have also taken place, including the departure of the chief technology officer in August and all original founders.

Currently, Canoo is relying on loans from the venture firm managed by its CEO, Tony Aquila, to maintain operations.

Production and Delivery Status

The specific vehicles being produced at the Oklahoma facility prior to the operational pause remain unclear.

Canoo has successfully delivered electric vans to several key organizations for evaluation purposes. These include NASA, the USPS, Walmart, and the Department of Defense.

However, the company has yet to achieve its goals of scaling up production to serve a wider range of commercial clients.

Company Statement and Response

In a released statement, Canoo expressed regret over the furloughs, particularly during the holiday season, stating they were unavoidable. The company remains optimistic about reinstating employees in the near future.

CEO Tony Aquila has not yet publicly responded to requests for further comment regarding the situation.
