TikTok CEO: ByteDance CFO Takes the Helm

TikTok Announces Shouzi Chew as New CEO

Approximately eight months following the resignation of Kevin Mayer, the previous CEO of TikTok, amidst significant pressure from the Trump administration, TikTok has appointed a new permanent leader.

Shouzi Chew, recently brought on board as ByteDance’s CFO, will now also serve as TikTok CEO, concurrently maintaining his CFO position within the parent company. This announcement was made Friday morning.

A Shift in Leadership

This decision is considered a strategic move, potentially indicating the company’s belief that the most challenging period of conflict with the U.S. government has passed. President Biden has not shown the same level of interest in pursuing the restrictions championed by his predecessor.

Vanessa Pappas, who previously held the position of interim CEO, will transition into the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO).

ByteDance CEO Comments on the Transition

“The combination of Shou and Vanessa in these leadership positions is expected to facilitate continued expansion,” stated Yiming Zhang, CEO of ByteDance, in an official press release.

“Shou possesses a comprehensive understanding of both the company and the broader industry. His experience includes leading a team that was an early investor, alongside a decade of work within the technology sector. He will strengthen the team, concentrating on areas like corporate governance and long-term strategic planning.”

Chew’s Background and Experience

Before joining ByteDance earlier this year, Chew held an executive position at Xiaomi. His career also includes previous roles at DST and Goldman Sachs.

Shouzi Chew’s appointment marks a new chapter for TikTok as it navigates the evolving landscape of international regulations and continues its global growth.
