Pinksky: Instagram-like App Now Available on Android

Pinksky Launches Android App, Offering an Instagram-Like Experience on Bluesky
Android users of Bluesky can now utilize a new application designed with a user experience reminiscent of Instagram, rather than X. Launched on Tuesday, Pinksky’s Android version delivers a photo-centric social networking platform constructed upon the Bluesky network.
A New Contender in the Social Media Landscape
This application joins a growing number of platforms aiming to attract users who previously utilized Instagram. It provides a comparable user interface to Meta’s application, but is founded on open-source technology. Many emerging services, such as Pinksky, are leveraging the existing Bluesky social network to connect users with their established social circles and content streams.
However, utilizing Bluesky as its foundation imposes certain limitations on the app’s functionality. These constraints include a maximum of four photos per post and a video length limit of one minute.
Developed by Ramon Souza
Pinksky was created by Ramon Souza, a developer specializing in full-stack web technologies.
Souza shares with TechCrunch that his inspiration stemmed from a pre-existing interest in open technologies like ActivityPub – the protocol that powers Mastodon – and Nostr, another open social protocol. Bluesky, conversely, utilizes the AT Protocol (or atproto), which is currently stimulating innovation within the independent developer community.
Targeting a Specific User Segment
Despite the visual similarities to Instagram, Souza anticipates that Pinksky will appeal to a distinct audience.
Responding to a query from TechCrunch, he explains that Instagram caters to several user groups: those who primarily consume Reels, followers of content creators, and individuals seeking connection with friends. He believes Pinksky will primarily resonate with the latter segment – prioritizing photos and personal connections over viral and repetitive content.
Essentially, the app aims to recreate a more traditional, photo-focused Instagram experience.
Features and Functionality
The application was initially released for iOS, offering a familiar Instagram-like interface. This includes user profiles showcasing photos, a feed displaying photos and videos, and a Stories feature with content visibility limited to 24 hours. User interaction, such as commenting and liking posts, is synchronized with the Bluesky client application.
Leveraging the Bluesky infrastructure means users’ existing social networks are automatically available upon logging in, provided they possess a Bluesky account.
Future Development and Business Model
Currently, the app is considered an experimental project. However, Souza indicates that this could evolve with increased user interest. Potential future developments include integration with other technologies like Mastodon, Pixelfed, or Nostr, or the possibility of running a dedicated instance.
Given that Souza is currently self-funding Pinksky’s operation, any expansions would likely necessitate the implementation of a business model, potentially through premium features.
Competition in the Open Social Media Space
Pinksky is entering a competitive market alongside other applications being developed within this space, including Flashes, Pixelfed, and Reelo.
