The Rise of Remote Collaboration in Electronics Design

Even prior to the global disruptions caused by the recent pandemic, a shift towards remote collaboration was already underway. However, the last eighteen months have significantly accelerated the re-evaluation of traditional work methodologies.

This trend has been a key focus for Flux, a company that initiated development in 2019. The team comprises individuals with experience from leading technology firms like Apple, Facebook, and NASA.

Introducing Flux: A Real-Time Collaboration Platform

Flux has engineered a web-based tool designed for real-time collaboration in the fields of electronics design and engineering. Today, the startup announced the successful completion of a $12 million seed funding round.

The investment was spearheaded by Outsiders Fund, with further participation from Bain Capital Ventures, 8VC, and Liquid2 VC. These funds will be allocated to expanding the development team, furthering research and development of new features, and broadening the company’s marketing efforts.

Driving Forces Behind Flux’s Growth

Flux attributes the growing interest in its technology to two primary factors: the widespread adoption of remote work – a trend expected to persist – and the ongoing challenges in hardware supply chains, notably the current chip shortage.

“Significant changes have occurred in the world of chip development since the 1970s and 80s,” stated Matthias Wagner, co-founder and CEO of Flux, in a press release. “The present chip shortage is merely the latest indication of these shifts.”

Wagner continued, “The supply chain difficulties we are currently experiencing are not solely attributable to the pandemic; they are rooted in a long-term lack of focus on the design process itself. Flux was created to address these issues, and we are grateful for the support of investors who share our vision.”

Key Features and Accessibility

Flux boasts compatibility with all modern web browsers, eliminating the need for any software downloads. The platform incorporates a simulator, automated component sourcing, and robust version control capabilities.

Furthermore, the Community Library provides users with access to schematics, models, and open-source components, drawing parallels to platforms like GitHub and Makerbot Thingiverse.

Monetization Strategy and Beta Launch

According to Wagner, Flux is adopting a monetization model similar to that of GitHub.

Alongside the funding announcement, the service is also initiating a beta launch, making it available for early access and testing.

This launch provides an opportunity for users to experience the benefits of collaborative, browser-based hardware design.
