BMW iX M60 Unveiled: Electric SUV Performance

BMW M Division Enters the Electric Era with the iX M60
For years, BMW’s M division has specialized in enhancing the performance of the German automaker’s standard production models. Like other leading manufacturers, BMW has been considering the implications of electric powertrains and advancements in autonomous driving technology for its high-performance M brand.
The i4 M50 marked the division’s initial foray into all-electric vehicles, offering a potent 536 horsepower in a sleek sedan. Now, at this year’s CES, BMW is unveiling the iX M60, the most powerful iteration of its flagship iX technology demonstrator.
Performance and Specifications
This 2023 model boasts 610 horsepower when Sport Mode is activated, aiming to blend the innovative iX platform with the performance legacy of the M-series. The iX M60 is engineered to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds.
Its dual-motor configuration delivers a substantial 811 lb-ft of instantaneous torque when utilizing launch control. The vehicle’s top speed is electronically governed at 155 mph, providing ample capability for most driving scenarios.
Despite its considerable size and weight, the iX M60 is projected to achieve a range of 280 miles on a single charge (preliminary EPA estimate). This compares to the Tesla Model Y’s maximum range of 330 miles.
Utilizing a DC fast charger, the battery can be replenished from 10% to 80% capacity in approximately 35 minutes.

Notably, BMW highlights that the iX M60’s motors do not rely on rare earth metals, achieved through the elimination of permanent magnets. Instead, they employ a “current-energized synchronous machine” principle.
Enhanced Handling and Comfort
The vehicle incorporates a standard adaptive dual-axle air suspension system, featuring electronically controlled shock absorbers. This system maintains optimal vehicle height regardless of speed, with manual height adjustment also available.

BMW has integrated its latest generation of sensors and software for both driver assistance and infotainment systems. A powerful computing platform provides significant potential for ongoing advancements in automated driving and parking capabilities.
Standard features include BMW Live Cockpit Professional, BMW Natural Interaction, a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, BMW Laser Light, Comfort Access, and Active Seat Ventilation for both front occupants.
Furthermore, the Radiant Heating Package extends warmth to the seats, steering wheel, and armrests. Radiant heating is also integrated into the door panels and dashboard, enhancing comfort during colder weather excursions.
