BMW iDrive Next Generation: New Operating System Debuts

BMW's Next-Generation iDrive 8 System and Curved Display

The conventional center dashboard display, resembling a photo frame, is a common feature in contemporary vehicles. However, BMW is diverging from this established design with its forthcoming iDrive 8 system. The company is introducing the “BMW Curved Display,” an evolution that expands the central display across the entire cockpit.

Although appearing as a single, seamless unit, the Curved Display is comprised of two distinct screens: a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display. BMW characterizes this design as having an “appearance of almost floating.”

Debut in Electric Models

The innovative curved display, integrated with the new iDrive 8 system, will initially feature in the all-electric iX and i4 models. These vehicles are anticipated to become available later this year.

BMW has indicated that the underlying technology powering this system is capable of processing data at a rate 20 to 30 times greater than its predecessor. Further details regarding the technology stack are expected to be revealed after July, as stated by Frank Weber, BMW’s head of development, during a recent press briefing.

Redesigned User Interface and Layout Options

The core of the iDrive 8 system is a comprehensive redesign of the user interface. Drivers will have the ability to select from a variety of distinct layouts.

These include a standard “Drive” layout, featuring a dynamic central area on the information display for customizable information. A “focus” mode is available for more spirited driving, while a “gallery” layout prioritizes widgets from media applications. Finally, a “calm” mode displays only vehicle speed in the center of the information display, minimizing distractions.

Driving Modes and Map Options

The system offers three different driving modes – efficient, sport, and personal – allowing drivers to adjust engine throttle, steering characteristics, chassis settings, and even the car’s audio profile.

For navigation, three modes are provided: adaptive, reduced, and expanded. This design philosophy centers on empowering drivers to control the amount of information presented to them.

Acknowledging the extensive personalization options, Weber emphasized the system’s user-friendliness, ensuring it doesn’t overwhelm drivers. He noted a strong demand for customization, particularly in markets like China.

“We’ve included a ‘My Mode’ function – a simple interface offering Sport, Efficiency, and Personal options,” Weber explained. “This allows drivers to easily choose between a reduced information display or a fully personalized experience.”

Personalized Settings via BMW ID

BMW is also introducing a new system for saving personalized settings through the BMW ID, accessible via the My BMW app on smartphones.

Enhanced Intelligent Personal Assistant

The update also includes the next generation of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, initially showcased at TechCrunch Disrupt several years ago. Built on Microsoft’s Azure Cognitive Services, the assistant will offer more natural and intuitive interactions.

Beyond voice commands, the assistant now incorporates visual elements and integrates with BMW’s gesture recognition technology. The effectiveness of these features will be evaluated through practical testing.

“The assistant’s visual presentation has been enhanced with spheres of light, providing more expressive capabilities and a clearer focus,” the company stated. “This creates a more engaging and identifiable interface.”

Remote Software Updates and iDrive 7 Support

Like the iDrive 7 system, the new operating system will support remote software updates, delivered over-the-air via the car’s built-in SIM card and 5G connectivity (available in the iX) or through the My BMW app.

Weber confirmed that existing vehicles with iDrive 7 will receive select features from iDrive 8 where feasible, and iDrive 7 will continue to receive updates.

“Similar to the smartphone world, we will integrate beneficial features from iDrive 8 into iDrive 7,” Weber said. “However, not all functionalities can be transferred to the previous generation. Nevertheless, we remain committed to updating and supporting iDrive 7.”

Addressing the Chip Shortage

Weber also addressed the ongoing global chip shortage, stating that BMW has successfully navigated the challenges since Christmas, maintaining production levels. While hesitant to provide forecasts, he mentioned the company is actively developing alternative engineering solutions.

“So far, we’ve been able to adjust our production pipeline to avoid any disruptions,” he said.
