BMW Celebrates M Division’s Milestone with Bold XM Concept

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of its high-performance M division, BMW unveiled a striking concept vehicle inspired by a rock star persona – a nod to figures like David Lee Roth. This plug-in hybrid concept seamlessly integrates V8 power with innovative M design elements.

A Second Exclusive M Vehicle

Internally referred to as “Rock Star,” the XM SUV plug-in hybrid represents only the second vehicle to be developed exclusively by the M division.

Previewed earlier this month in Los Angeles by TechCrunch, the XM SUV is slated for production in 2022, following necessary regulatory adjustments. The automaker confirms the production model will closely resemble the showcased concept, appealing to those with a penchant for bold aesthetics.

Distinctive Design Cues

The BMW XM draws inspiration from the company’s existing SUV lineup and the legacy of M vehicles, yet distinguishes itself through a more assertive design language.

The vehicle’s rear end features unique cat-eye LED lights, a BMW logo integrated into the glass, and an M quad-exhaust system. Instead of traditional horizontal placement, the hexagonal exhaust tips are vertically mounted flanking a substantial diffuser. The signature kidney grilles are further accentuated with LED outlining.

The overall design intentionally commands attention – a deliberate choice aligned with the automaker’s vision.

Catering to a Desire for Expressive Luxury

Franciscus van Meel, chairman of the board of BMW M, explained during the vehicle’s unveiling that customer feedback indicated a desire for increased expressiveness and luxury in their vehicles.

BMW identifies its target demographic as extroverted, expressive individuals who might also consider models like the Lamborghini Urus and Mercedes G-Class. Pricing details, however, remain undisclosed at this time.

An Interior That Rivals the Exterior

The XM’s interior is arguably as captivating as its exterior design.

The cabin’s front row is adorned with “vintage brown” leather, prioritizing performance and driver-focused ergonomics. The rear passenger area, however, adopts a radically different aesthetic. Inspired by a lavish lounge, the back seats and floor are upholstered in blue and green velvet. The ambiance evokes a sense of playful extravagance.

A crystal structure headliner adds a further layer of artistry, illuminated indirectly from the sides to create a captivating, planetarium-like effect.

Should BMW synchronize these lights with the music of artists like Tame Impala, the XM could resonate strongly with a specific audience of music enthusiasts.

Powertrain and Performance

This rolling music club combines the power of a V8 engine with plug-in hybrid technology, generating a combined output of 750 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque.

While specific battery capacity details haven’t been released, BMW is aiming for an EPA-estimated electric-only range of 30 miles. This range, while not comparable to some fully electric offerings, provides sufficient capability for quiet departures.

A Design Brief for Shock Value

According to Marcus Syring, head of BMW M design, the XM was conceived as a truly exceptional vehicle. The BMW board challenged the design team to deliver something unexpected and groundbreaking.

“BMW consistently develops high-tech models, exploring new territories with vehicles like the i3, i8, and iX,” Syring stated to TechCrunch. “The XM follows this pattern, representing a unique exploration of new design possibilities.”

In a market where automotive advertising frequently leverages rock star imagery, BMW’s M division has created a vehicle embodying the spirit of a performer like David Lee Roth – bold, flamboyant, and ultimately, welcoming.
