Bluesky Testing Trending Topics Feature

Bluesky Launches Initial Trending Topics Test

Bluesky, the social networking platform, announced on Christmas Day that it is currently evaluating a new feature: a trending topics view.

This functionality is being rolled out to users globally, appearing on both the desktop and mobile versions of the application.

Accessing Trending Topics

On desktop, trending topics are displayed in the right-hand sidebar. Mobile users can access them by selecting the search icon within the app.

Currently, the trending topics feature is limited to content in the English language.

Customization and Control

Users have the ability to disable the trending topics display. This can be achieved by navigating to Settings > Content and Media and deselecting the “Enable trending topics” setting.

Bluesky is prioritizing user experience by ensuring that muted words and phrases are carried over to the trending topics section. This means content previously hidden by a user’s mute list will remain invisible within the trending topics.

Feature Development and User Base

With a growing user base exceeding 25 million, Bluesky emphasizes that this initial release is just the first iteration of the feature.

Further improvements and refinements are planned based on user feedback and data analysis.

Third-Party Implementations and Competition

Interestingly, alternative Bluesky clients, such as Graysky, had already incorporated a trending topics feature in the previous year.

Bluesky’s competitor, Threads, began its rollout of trending topics to users in the United States in March and expanded testing to Japan in October.

This launch positions Bluesky to compete directly with other platforms offering similar functionalities.
