Bluesky Controversy: Users Petition to Ban Jesse Singal Over Anti-Trans Views

Bluesky Confronts a Critical Test of its Community Standards
With a growing user base of 25 million, Bluesky is currently navigating a significant challenge that will define its future identity. The platform’s reputation as a secure and welcoming environment, a haven from the issues present on X, is being questioned.
A substantial number of Bluesky users are now calling for the removal of a recent addition to the platform due to concerns about his expressed opinions and published work.
Controversy Surrounding Jesse Singal’s Addition
Writer and podcaster Jesse Singal joined Bluesky 12 days ago, sparking considerable opposition within the community. He has been documented by GLAAD’s Accountability Project for his writings concerning transgender issues and other sensitive topics.
The GLAAD project actively “catalogs anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and discriminatory actions of politicians, commentators, organization heads, religious leaders, and legal figures, who have used their platforms, influence, and power to spread misinformation and harm LGBTQ people.”
Singal is currently the most blocked user on the network, and discontent regarding his presence continues to escalate. Users are demanding a clear stance from Bluesky: either it will actively prevent the hosting of problematic individuals, or it will refrain from amplifying their reach through its moderation capabilities.
A compromise between these two positions is deemed untenable.
A Refuge for Marginalized Groups
In its early stages, Bluesky attracted a significant influx of users – including trans individuals, as well as Black and queer communities – who had left Twitter following Elon Musk’s acquisition and subsequent shift towards more conservative viewpoints.
Bluesky offers a range of customizable tools designed to enhance user control over their social networking experience. These include block lists, layered moderation, personalized feeds, custom algorithms, and labeling services.
These features allow users to proactively block groups of individuals they wish to avoid, such as supporters of specific political movements, utilizing dedicated block lists.
Concerns About Increased Harassment
Many community members who migrated from Twitter now fear that Singal’s presence jeopardizes their experience on Bluesky. His high profile and established network of followers could potentially lead to an increase in harassment, they argue.
While users can cite numerous examples of Singal’s writings and opinions as justification for their concerns, a ban would require a demonstrable violation of Bluesky’s terms of service and guidelines.
Some Bluesky users contend that he has already violated these guidelines, alleging targeted harassment and a history of mistreating transgender individuals. They also accuse him of sharing private medical information without patient consent – a claim Singal refutes.
Growing Calls for Action
A new petition on Change.org is urging Bluesky to ban Singal outright.
As of this writing, the petition requesting Bluesky to enforce its guidelines has garnered over 18,000 signatures, including support from singer Lizzo.
Bluesky users have also mass-reported Singal’s account, prompting the company to initially ban, then reinstate, and ultimately label his account as intolerant through its moderation service. This labeling allows users to filter or receive warnings regarding posts from this account.
A Dealbreaker for Many
However, many Bluesky users are not satisfied with mere moderation and filtering; they desire Singal’s complete removal from the platform. This issue has become a critical point for many.
Maintaining his presence risks damaging the community, eroding trust, and potentially driving users away, while also signaling acceptance of harmful behavior.
Conversely, banning Singal could invite scrutiny from Brendan Carr, a potential future head of the FCC, who has expressed concerns about social networks suppressing conservative viewpoints. Any action taken by Bluesky will inevitably attract attention, both positive and negative.
Past Moderation Challenges
This is not the first instance of Bluesky facing user backlash related to moderation. The platform experienced strained relationships with some Black users last year due to insufficient action against hateful and violent rhetoric.
In February, the company appointed Aaron Rodericks, a former Trust & Safety executive from Twitter/X, to lead Bluesky’s moderation efforts and prevent similar issues. Rodericks is currently receiving significant feedback from Bluesky users regarding Singal’s account.
Lack of Initial Response
Bluesky did not respond to requests for comment prior to publication. Singal has declined to provide a statement.
Following publication, the Bluesky Safety account released the following statement on the platform:
We talked with Singal after publication of this article; he declined to comment. This article was also updated to include Bluesky’s statement after publication and to correct an error.
