Block's Cash App Integrates Lightning Network for Bitcoin Payments

Block's Cash App Now Supports Free Bitcoin Transfers via Lightning Network
Jack Dorsey, formerly the CEO of Twitter, relinquished his position late last year to concentrate his efforts on Block (previously known as Square). Block had been progressively increasing its investment in blockchain technology and cryptocurrency, mirroring Dorsey’s own interests.
Integration with the Lightning Network
The results of Block’s commitment to crypto are now becoming apparent. Cash App has announced its integration with the Lightning Network, enabling its users in the U.S. to transmit bitcoin without incurring fees to recipients globally.
Prior to today’s official announcement, this functionality was undergoing a gradual deployment to Cash App users. The company anticipates the complete rollout will occur over the “coming weeks,” extending access to all U.S. Cash App customers.
Sending Bitcoin Internationally
Upon activation, Cash App users will have the capability to send bitcoin internationally to any external wallet that is compatible. This includes wallets used by family and friends, as well as self-managed options such as Chivo Wallet, BlueWallet or Muun Wallet.
Furthermore, users will be able to send bitcoin to any merchant accepting Lightning Network payments, all without any transaction fees. While not yet widespread, a growing number of merchants are beginning to accept Lightning payments, allowing for purchases like pizza or gift cards using this technology.
Empowering the Creator Economy
The integration of the Lightning Network into Cash App has the potential to bolster the expanding creator economy. Fans can directly send bitcoin to creators or causes that accept Lightning payments as a form of support.
Advantages of the Lightning Network
Cash App highlights the benefits of this system, explaining that traditional Bitcoin network transactions often experience delays and higher fees. In contrast, the Lightning Network – named for its speed – offers faster processing.
Transactions on the Lightning Network occur off-chain, independent of the main blockchain. This reduces fees, processing time, and energy consumption. However, the network still leverages the blockchain’s underlying technology and decentralization, with transactions periodically consolidated and recorded on the main Bitcoin blockchain.
Dorsey’s Vision and Spiral’s Role
Dorsey previously expressed his enthusiasm for the Lightning Network, describing it in a 2019 tweet as a “cool example” of innovation within the #BitcoinTwitter community.
More recently, Spiral, Block’s dedicated bitcoin-focused division, introduced its Lightning Development Kit (LDK). This kit provides a streamlined method for integrating bitcoin payments into any application.
The new Lightning integration within Cash App is powered by Spiral’s LDK. Cash App is also the first and largest payments application to integrate with LDK, according to the company.
Strategic Synergy within Block
The LDK rollout exemplifies Block’s strategic approach, where one division develops tools that are subsequently adopted by other businesses within the Block ecosystem.
