Bird Scooters Now Integrated with Google Maps

Bird, a leading micromobility provider, has officially been added to Google Maps. This integration allows users across the U.S. to locate nearby e-scooters and e-bikes directly within the mapping application.

Recent Integrations in the Micromobility Sector

This announcement follows closely on the heels of Spin’s similar integration with Google Maps. Furthermore, Lime has been a Google Maps partner since 2019 and recently expanded its reach through a collaboration with the Moovit transit planning app.

Expanding Partnerships and Global Reach

Bird already collaborates with various mobility-as-a-service platforms, including Skipr, Tranzer, and Whim, particularly in Antwerp and throughout Belgium. Recent partnerships with national rail operators like SNCF in France and Trenitalia in Italy demonstrate the company’s commitment to multimodal transportation.

The company intends to broaden its Google Maps integration to include cities partnering with Bird outside of the United States, as stated by a company spokesperson. Such integrations are becoming standard practice as micromobility firms strive for deeper integration within the wider transportation network.

A Commitment to Sustainable Transportation

“As the demand for environmentally friendly transportation options grows, Bird remains dedicated to fulfilling this need,” stated Travis VanderZanden, Bird’s CEO and founder. “We are also focused on alleviating traffic congestion in densely populated urban areas.”

VanderZanden continued, “Our integration with Google Maps simplifies the adoption of eco-friendly travel methods and aims to reduce our collective dependence on gas-powered vehicles, especially for trips under five miles in urban environments globally.”

How the Integration Works

Similar to Lime and Spin, Bird’s available vehicles will appear as an option when users select the “bike” toggle within the Google Maps app. The app will display crucial information, including estimated travel time, cost, and the environmental benefits of choosing a scooter or bike.

Bird was unable to confirm whether estimated battery range would also be displayed, a feature currently available with Lime and Spin’s vehicles on the platform.

Seamless Transition to the Bird App

Users interested in taking a Bird ride will click the “unlock” button on the Google Maps screen. This action will redirect them to the Bird app (available on both iOS and Android) to complete the unlocking and payment process.

Strategic Timing with the NYC Pilot Program

The announcement of this Google Maps integration coincides with the launch of New York City’s inaugural e-scooter pilot program in the Bronx, involving Bird, Veo, and Lime. This timing is particularly advantageous for Bird.

Recently, Google Maps began testing a feature in New York City to indicate train car occupancy levels, assisting riders in maintaining social distancing. Now, users can potentially opt for a Bird or Lime vehicle via the app as an alternative to crowded subway cars.
