A Journey Through the EV Landscape
My coverage of the electric vehicle sector began fifteen years ago, focusing on a nascent EV company striving for survival amidst the fluctuations of the clean tech market. At that time, Tesla had garnered attention from a limited group of celebrities and dedicated EV advocates.
The Expanding Musk Ecosystem
Significant transformations have occurred since then, notably concerning the profile of Tesla’s principal shareholder and Chief Executive Officer, Elon Musk. His portfolio of companies has grown substantially to include SpaceX, Tesla, X, xAI, Neuralink, and The Boring Company.
Musk is actively leveraging these ventures to recruit personnel for the Department of Government Efficiency. This entity was formally created through an executive order issued by President Trump.
Investigating the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)
Drawing upon years of experience covering Musk and his companies, I collaborated with multiple TechCrunch editors and reporters on a recent project. Our objective was to identify individuals employed by DOGE and clarify their affiliations within Musk’s broader network.
This report is continually evolving and will be updated as our investigations progress. If you possess information regarding DOGE, its employees, or related subjects, please contact me at kirsten.korosec@techcrunch.com or via Signal at kkorosec.07.

Industry Updates and Financial Shifts
Recent market activity revealed a mix of setbacks and strategic moves. Several ventures faced significant challenges this week, including dissolved partnerships, operational shutdowns, bankruptcy filings, and a postponed initial public offering.Nikola, the hydrogen-electric truck manufacturer, has initiated bankruptcy proceedings. This action follows unsuccessful attempts to secure sufficient funding or identify a suitable acquirer. The company has been grappling with repercussions from past controversies and the legal conviction of its founder, Trevor Milton, for securities and wire fraud related to overstated claims about its technology. Recall the widely circulated marketing demonstration?
The peer-to-peer car-sharing sector experienced considerable turbulence during the past week.
Getaround, a San Francisco-based startup that transitioned from a venture capital favorite to a publicly traded company via a SPAC, has ceased operations within the United States. This decision occurred just one year after a workforce reduction of 30% in North America as part of a broader restructuring effort. The company is now concentrating its resources on its European markets, which include Norway, Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, and Austria.
The manner in which Getaround executed this shutdown was particularly noteworthy. The board of directors reached the decision on February 7th, but owners and renters were not informed of the closure until February 12th. Furthermore, insurance coverage was scheduled to terminate by the end of that same day.
Turo has withdrawn its plans for an initial public offering. The company initially filed for an IPO in January 2022, but market conditions shifted shortly thereafter. Despite indications of a potential IPO in 2025, those plans have now been abandoned.
Additional noteworthy financial activities include…
Aurora has established an agreement to potentially issue up to $500 million in stock through an “at-the-market” offering. In its Q4 2024 earnings report, Aurora indicated sufficient capital to support initial commercialization in April. This agreement provides a mechanism for rapid fundraising if needed to facilitate scaling and achieve cash-flow positivity.
Fetii, an Austin-based group ride-share application, secured $7.35 million in seed funding. The investment round was spearheaded by Mark Cuban, with participation from Y Combinator and Goodwater Capital, among others.
Negotiations for a $60 billion merger between Honda and Nissan have collapsed. Reports suggest that factors of corporate pride contributed to the failure of the agreement.
One Equity Partners, a private equity firm, is in the process of acquiring Wheeler Fleet Solutions, a distributor of aftermarket parts. The financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.
Saronic, a manufacturer of military drone-boats, has successfully raised $600 million in funding, resulting in a company valuation of $4 billion. General Catalyst led the investment round in the company, which is less than three years old.
Recent Developments in Transportation Technology
Automated Vehicle SystemsAvride’s self-governing sidewalk delivery robots are currently fulfilling orders for Uber Eats patrons within Jersey City.
Waymo is potentially preparing to introduce a membership-based program. A survey was distributed to select Los Angeles residents, inquiring about their preferences regarding various membership options. The company confirmed regular research is conducted to assess rider interests, but refrained from further details.
Serve Robotics has initiated operations of its delivery robots in Miami. Furthermore, the company has broadened its collaboration with Shake Shack and established a new partnership with Mister O1 Extraordinary Pizza, potentially offering robotic delivery to Uber Eats customers ordering from these establishments.
Electric Vehicles and Charging Infrastructure
The political involvement of Elon Musk – specifically his role within the Department of Government Efficiency – has led to some consumer disapproval of Tesla products. A senior reporter, Sean O’Kane, interviewed organizers of the Tesla Takeover movement, which instigated demonstrations at Tesla retail locations across numerous U.S. cities.
Blue Whale Materials, specializing in lithium-ion battery recycling, has formed a partnership with Call2Recycle. This collaboration aims to enhance domestic battery recycling capabilities and address the demand for locally sourced battery materials.
The Evolving Landscape of Aviation
Beta Technologies has maintained a relatively low profile compared to other companies in the electric aviation sector. However, the startup has been steadily expanding its operations and accumulating more piloted flight hours than any competitor, guided by its founder and CEO, Kyle Clark.
During the Trump administration, numerous Federal Aviation Administration employees responsible for maintaining essential air traffic control systems were dismissed. This occurred concurrently with SpaceX being contracted to assist in the development of a new air traffic control system.
Micromobility Trends
Lime has reported a second consecutive year of positive free cash flow. The scooter and bike-sharing company also announced that its adjusted EBITDA surpassed $140 million in 2024, an increase from $94 million in 2023. It’s important to note that these figures are currently unaudited.
Ride-Sharing and the Gig Economy
Uber has initiated legal action against DoorDash, alleging that the delivery service is hindering competition through tactics that pressure restaurant owners into exclusive agreements.
Recent Automotive Developments
Welcome to another installment of “This Week’s Wheels.” This week’s focus is on the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5, with a price range of $43,975 to $59,575, contingent upon the selected trim level.Automotive journalist Emme Hall recently evaluated this updated all-electric compact SUV and identified several commendable features. However, a notable limitation was observed, at least currently.
The vehicle incorporates Tesla’s North American Charging Standard port, but Hall found the port’s positioning created an issue with Tesla Supercharger cable reach. The cable proved insufficient in length to connect properly.
Consequently, Hall needed to either await the departure of another vehicle from a charging space to utilize its cable, effectively occupying two spaces, or employ the vehicle’s navigation system to locate a CCS-compatible charging station and use the included adapter.
This situation is less than ideal. However, positive aspects exist. The 2025 model introduces the XRT trim, featuring a one-inch suspension lift and 29-inch Continental CrossContact ATR tires, enhancing off-road capability on dirt and gravel surfaces.
Furthermore, the 2025 model year, benefiting from several technological enhancements, maintains composed handling and a comfortable driving experience on paved roads.
