Running Applications as Administrator in Windows 8

Windows 8 represents a significant departure from previous versions, notably with the removal of the traditional Start Menu. In its place, a new “immersive” Start Screen is introduced.

This change can leave users questioning how to perform common tasks, such as launching applications with elevated privileges.

Accessing Administrator Mode

The absence of a conventional context menu on the Start Screen necessitates an alternative method for running programs as an administrator.

Fortunately, several options are available to achieve this functionality.

  • Power User Menu: Press the Windows key + X simultaneously.
  • Search: Type the application’s name in the Start Screen search bar.

Executing the Application

Once you’ve accessed the application through either of the methods above, you can then run it as an administrator.

Right-click on the application’s icon in the search results or Power User Menu.

Select “Run as administrator” from the context menu that appears.

Windows will then prompt you for confirmation, if necessary, before launching the application with administrative rights.

This process ensures that the application has the necessary permissions to make system-level changes.

Executing Applications with Elevated Privileges on Windows 8

To initiate a Metro-style application, navigating to the Start Screen is the initial step. If you are currently located elsewhere, a quick press of the Windows key will instantly return you to this screen.

The subsequent action involves selecting the specific application intended for execution with administrator rights. This is accomplished by performing a right-click on the application’s tile.

Upon examining the screen’s lower portion, a "Run as administrator" option will become visible. Select this button to proceed.

A User Account Control (UAC) prompt will then appear. Confirming with a click on "Yes" will launch the application with the necessary elevated permissions. This completes the process.
