Windows 8: Show Full Path in Explorer - Beginner's Guide

Restoring the File Path in the Windows 8 Title Bar

Previous iterations of the Windows operating system routinely showcased your present location within the file system directly in the Title Bar.

Windows 8, however, altered this default setting. Users desiring this functionality are able to re-enable it with a simple adjustment.

How to Re-enable the File Path Display

The process to restore the display of the file path in the Title Bar involves modifying a setting within Windows Explorer’s Folder Options. This allows for easier navigation and a clearer understanding of your current directory.

  • Open Folder Options: Begin by opening the Control Panel.
  • Access Explorer Options: Navigate to "File Explorer Options" (or "Folder Options" depending on your Control Panel view).
  • View Tab: Within the Folder Options window, select the "View" tab.
  • Show Full Path: Locate the option labeled "Show full path in title bar".
  • Apply Changes: Check the box next to this option and click "Apply", then "OK".

Following these steps will reinstate the display of the complete file path in the Title Bar of all Windows Explorer windows. This provides a convenient visual cue for your current location.

This feature enhances usability, particularly for users accustomed to seeing the full path for quick reference and efficient file management.

Displaying the Complete Path in the Windows Explorer Title Bar

To launch Windows Explorer, utilize the keyboard shortcut Windows key + E. Following this, navigate to the View tab within the Explorer window.
