Essentially, Beehiiv’s scope now extends far beyond simply newsletters. Tyler Denk, the company’s co-founder and CEO – himself a popular newsletter author – discussed with TechCrunch the rationale behind this expansion, attributing it largely to direct customer feedback.

Responding to User Demand

From the outset, Beehiiv offered rudimentary blog templates, but users quickly expressed a desire for more. Denk recalled the consistent feedback: “Our users consistently told us that while they appreciated our email capabilities, their blogs appeared generic and lacked customization options. They wanted the ability to sell courses, capture leads, and enjoy greater website flexibility.”

This demand led to the acquisition of TypeDream, a Y Combinator company, to address the need for enhanced website functionality. As Denk noted, “Once you provide a little, they ask for more.”

Increased Competition and Consolidation

Beehiiv’s broadened feature set positions it as a more direct competitor to other creator platforms, even those not initially focused on newsletters. Denk anticipates significant “consolidation in the creator space,” potentially through business failures, mergers, or acquisitions.

However, Denk remains optimistic about the continued potential for new newsletters. He believes that “quality content will always rise to the top,” and that a more fragmented social media landscape may even present increased opportunities.

“Arming the Rebels of Digital Content”

What does it mean to say that Beehiiv is “arming the rebels of digital content?” Denk drew inspiration from Shopify’s president, who spoke of “arming the rebels of digital commerce.”

The core idea is empowering individuals and shifting power away from traditional institutions. Previously, established media outlets controlled distribution, but now, independent creators – podcasters, writers, and others – are gaining prominence. This represents a “democratization of information” and a new era where success is attainable through consistently evolving content.

Denk highlighted the growing trend of journalists from established publications building personal brands and launching independent ventures, facilitated by tools like Beehiiv.

How does Beehiiv cater to both individual creators and larger publications like TechCrunch? Denk described Beehiiv as “the operating system of the content economy.”

The platform serves both the long tail of individual creators and established publishers effectively. The common thread is that content drives their businesses, and Beehiiv aims to be the foundational infrastructure supporting their success.

Denk’s experience at Morning Brew, where he built the internal infrastructure, informed Beehiiv’s approach: to deliver enterprise-level software at a price point accessible to all creators. This means a UFC newsletter with five readers can utilize the same toolkit as Time or TechCrunch.

Expanding Beyond Core Newsletter Functionality

Was the expansion into areas like the AI website builder always part of the plan? Denk explained that the roadmap is primarily driven by user feedback.

While Beehiiv initially offered basic website templates, users requested greater customization, the ability to sell courses, and more website functionality. This led to the acquisition of TypeDream and the subsequent development of a more robust website builder. Further user requests for features like booking time and selling digital products spurred additional development.

Denk emphasized Beehiiv’s product velocity and engineering capabilities, allowing them to quickly respond to user needs and expand their offerings.

The Inevitable Convergence of Creator Platforms

Denk acknowledged the trend of creator platforms expanding their feature sets, becoming increasingly competitive with one another. He predicted “huge consolidation in the creator space,” potentially through mergers, acquisitions, or business failures.

He believes email remains a critical and competitive area, due to its complex infrastructure. Beehiiv aims to excel in website building, link-in-bio tools, courses, and community features, believing they can surpass competitors in these areas.

A Focus on Product Quality and a Unique Business Model

What sets Beehiiv apart from other platforms? Denk emphasized the platform’s product quality and commitment to user experience, aiming to create a truly delightful product.

Furthermore, Beehiiv distinguishes itself by not taking a percentage of revenue generated through subscriptions, digital products, or appointments. This ethos reflects a belief in empowering creators without imposing additional fees.

Commitment to a Revenue-Share Free Model

Will Beehiiv maintain its commitment to not taking a cut of revenue streams as it expands? Denk affirmed that their goal is to continue relying solely on subscription fees.

While Beehiiv has gained visibility, Substack remains a prominent name in the newsletter space. Denk acknowledged Substack’s first-mover advantage but emphasized Beehiiv’s distinct approach.

He likened Beehiiv to Shopify, providing tools and infrastructure for creators, while Substack is more akin to Amazon, controlling the reader experience and data. Beehiiv prioritizes creator control and data ownership.

The Future of the Media Economy

What does Denk envision for the creator and media economy in the next 10 years? He anticipates a continuation of current trends, with AI potentially leading to job displacement and an increased emphasis on personal branding.

He believes that individuals who cultivate a strong online presence and demonstrate their expertise will be highly valued in the workforce. The ability to connect with audiences on a personal level will become even more crucial as AI becomes more prevalent.
