Bandcamp Fridays Extended Through May 2024

The last several months have presented significant challenges for those working in music. The cessation of live performances and the minimal compensation provided by streaming platforms have drastically altered the financial stability of numerous musicians. However, since March, Bandcamp has emerged as a vital source of support for many artists.

Each month, on the first Friday, the platform eliminates its revenue share, allowing artists and labels to retain a greater portion of the sales income. Through nine of these promotional days, the platform has facilitated approximately $40 million in revenue, with almost 800,000 customers purchasing music. Artists have consistently received around 93% of the income generated (with the remaining percentage covering processing costs), compared to the usual 82% on standard days.

Although the development and distribution of vaccines offer a positive outlook, a full recovery is not yet assured. Consequently, the company announced today that Bandcamp Fridays will continue at least until May 2021. The scheduled dates are February 5, March 5, April 2, and May 7.

Other digital music providers have demonstrated less initiative. In July, Spotify’s Chief Executive Officer, Daniel Ek, stated to the press, “Certain artists who previously thrived may find it difficult to succeed in the evolving music industry, where releasing an album every three to four years is no longer sufficient.”

Despite ongoing debate regarding music royalty rates, Spotify has invested substantial funds—amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars—in expanding its collection of exclusive podcast content.
