Backline Emerges from Stealth with $9 Million Seed Funding

Backline, a novel security startup leveraging AI agents for automated vulnerability remediation, has officially launched, backed by a $9 million seed round spearheaded by StageOne Ventures.

Founders' Proven Track Record

This venture marks the third startup endeavor for Maor Goldberg, who serves as the company’s co-founder and CEO. Previously, he co-founded Whitebox Security, later acquired by SailPoint in 2015, and Apolicy, a container security firm purchased by Sysdig in 2021.

Goldberg departed from Sysdig in 2024 to establish Backline alongside Eran Leib (Chief Customer Officer) and Aviad Chen (VP of R&D).

Addressing the Alert Fatigue Crisis

The core concept driving Backline stems from the overwhelming volume of security alerts faced by both developers and security teams.

backline automatically remediates security vulnerabilities“Organizations are consistently inundated with identified issues,” Goldberg stated. “Despite investing in tools from companies like Sysdig, Wiz, and Snyk, security teams often lack the capacity to address the majority of these problems.”

The Remediation Bottleneck

Security teams typically depend on engineers to resolve vulnerabilities or platform engineering teams to correct misconfigurations.

This reliance creates a persistent need for security personnel to seek assistance from other departments within the organization, teams which consistently struggle with limited time resources.

Automated Remediation with AI Agents

Backline is designed to ingest notifications from existing security tools and initiate the remediation of numerous issues. The platform’s AI agents analyze vulnerabilities, formulate remediation proposals, implement the necessary modifications, and subsequently validate their effectiveness.

The company emphasizes the importance of this testing phase, drawing inspiration from formal methods employed by hardware teams to ensure product reliability. This approach, Goldberg asserts, is vital for building user confidence.

Leveraging Existing LLMs

The company utilizes readily available large language models (LLMs) to power its functionality. “Our core intellectual property lies in extending the capabilities of existing security scanning tools,” Goldberg explained. “It’s about addressing high-priority problems and focusing on agent collaboration and process integration.”

Expanding Beyond Software Vulnerabilities

Backline’s future ambitions extend beyond the current focus on software vulnerability remediation. The company intends to address challenges within the software supply chain, including the detection of exposed secrets, resolution of identity and access management issues, and static application security testing.

Industry Validation

“Security backlogs are currently the primary concern for Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs),” noted Tal Slobodkin, Managing Partner at StageOne Ventures and an early investor in the founders’ previous venture. “Backline’s cybersecurity expertise, combined with its vision for autonomous remediation, offers a significant improvement in remediation speed. We have yet to encounter an organization that has fully resolved its security backlog, highlighting the substantial opportunity here.”

Additional Investors

Evolution Equity Partners and Gradient also participated in this seed funding round.
