AWS Expands Global Reach with New Local Zones

During the recent re:Invent conference, Amazon Web Services (AWS) revealed plans to introduce more than 30 new AWS Local Zones in key cities globally.

The rollout of these AWS Local Zones is scheduled to begin in 2022, extending availability to over 21 countries.

Countries Included in the Expansion

The expansion encompasses a wide geographic area, including Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, India, Kenya, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, and South Africa.

Understanding AWS Local Zones

AWS Local Zones represent a specific infrastructure deployment strategy. They bring compute, storage, and other chosen AWS services closer to customers.

This proximity enables the operation of applications on AWS that demand single-digit millisecond latencies for end-users or integration with on-premise systems.

aws to launch over 30 new local zones internationally starting in 2022Amazon CTO Werner Vogels expressed his enthusiasm, stating the company will be broadening the Local Zones internationally across Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia.

He specifically highlighted the inclusion of Amsterdam, his hometown, in the expansion plans.

Enhanced Latency and Existing Infrastructure

AWS emphasizes that these new locations, in addition to the 16 Local Zones already established within the United States, will facilitate serving global end-users with significantly reduced latency.

Currently, US-based Local Zones are situated in cities such as Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York City, Philadelphia, and Portland.
