AWS DMS Fleet Advisor: Simplified Data Migration to Amazon Cloud

Accelerating Cloud Migration with AWS Database Migration Service
During the AWS re:Invent conference two years prior, Andy Jassy, then CEO of AWS, expressed his dissatisfaction with the sluggish rate of cloud adoption. He aimed to identify methods for accelerating companies’ transitions to the cloud environment.
Yesterday, Adam Selipsky, the current AWS CEO, echoed this sentiment in his opening keynote, noting that progress remains slow. He indicated that only a limited percentage – between 5 and 15 percent – of workloads have been migrated to the cloud to date.
Challenges in Data Migration
A significant factor contributing to this slow pace is the complexity of migrating data from on-premises systems to the cloud. Despite the acknowledged benefits, transferring data from existing, traditional databases to new cloud databases is a resource-intensive and often difficult undertaking.
Organizations utilizing a variety of database types encounter even greater hurdles when attempting to move their data to the cloud. Identifying the optimal database service to align with their existing on-premises infrastructure presents a considerable challenge.
Amazon recognized these difficulties and sought to streamline the cloud migration process for its customers.
Introducing AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) Fleet Advisor
Today, AWS unveiled DMS Fleet Advisor, a tool specifically engineered to simplify and expedite data transfer to the cloud and ensure compatibility with the appropriate database service.
“DMS Fleet Advisor automatically creates a detailed inventory of your on-premises databases and analytics services by securely streaming data to Amazon S3. We then analyze this information to recommend the most suitable AWS Datastore and generate tailored migration plans.
This entire process now takes merely hours, a substantial improvement over the weeks or months previously required,” explained Swami Sivasubramanian, VP for Amazon AI, during the AI and machine learning keynote at AWS re:Invent.
Benefits of DMS Fleet Advisor
Sivasubramanian highlighted that this new approach not only accelerates migration but also reduces costs. By eliminating the need for external consultants, organizations can avoid associated expenses.
“This will significantly ease the modernization of your data infrastructure, enabling you to leverage powerful relational and purpose-built databases,” he added.
Key benefits include:
- Faster data migration
- Reduced migration costs
- Automated database inventory
- Customized migration plans
- Simplified data infrastructure modernization
