Aurora and Uber Freight Partner for Self-Driving Truckloads

Aurora and Uber Freight Advance Autonomous Trucking Collaboration
Aurora’s self-driving trucks are currently transporting shipments for Uber Freight clients in Texas. This is occurring as part of a staged commercial trial designed to strengthen the relationship between the two organizations.
Pilot Program Details
Although the pilot program was formally revealed on Wednesday, Aurora’s autonomous trucks – which consistently feature two safety operators – have been collaborating with Uber Freight for approximately one year, as stated by a company representative. This announcement signifies a transition from initial testing phases to a structured commercial pilot.
Aurora is leveraging the Uber Freight brokerage platform. This platform effectively connects trucking companies with shippers needing cargo transport. Currently, freight is being moved for customers between Dallas and Houston.
Expanding Capabilities and Aurora Horizon
Aurora intends to broaden its service routes as it establishes additional terminals. Utilizing the Uber Freight platform is a significant development.
The primary objective, which both companies are actively pursuing, is to integrate Aurora’s trucking subscription service directly into Uber Freight. Aurora Horizon, the trucking subscription service, functions as a comprehensive digital and logistical support system for the self-driving technology.
Components of Aurora Horizon
- A mission control system that integrates with carrier or network systems.
- Dispatching and routing communication.
- Vehicle health monitoring.
- Incident response management.
- A dedicated roadside assistance program.
Launch Timeline and Benefits
Aurora anticipates launching its autonomous trucking service before the end of 2023. Successful completion of the Uber Freight pilot will enable carriers subscribed to Aurora Horizon to access Uber Freight for increased freight hauling opportunities.
Aurora emphasizes that this integration will enhance carrier efficiency and prevent underutilization of trucking capacity.
Historical Context: Aurora and Uber’s Relationship
Wednesday’s announcement also highlights the strong connection between Aurora and Uber. Aurora completed the acquisition of Uber ATG, Uber’s self-driving division, one year ago.
The acquisition agreement was structured uniquely. Aurora did not make a cash payment for Uber ATG. Instead, Uber transferred its equity in ATG and invested $400 million into Aurora, resulting in a 26% ownership stake in the combined entity.
Aurora was a privately held company at the time, a status that changed in 2021 through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company. Subsequently, Aurora became a publicly traded company in November.
Uber Freight’s Strategic Growth
Uber Freight has also been actively expanding its operations. The logistics division, which became independent from Uber in 2018, acquired Transplace for approximately $2.25 billion from TPG Capital earlier this year.
This acquisition supports Uber Freight’s strategy to increase its market share in existing areas and expand its reach into Mexico.
