KontrolFreek, a company specializing in gaming and console accessories and based in Atlanta, has been purchased by SteelSeries, a global retailer of computer peripherals.

The financial details of the acquisition have not been revealed. However, KontrolFreek has successfully distributed over 2 million units of its primary product, which is sold in more than 9,000 stores across 60 nations and is also available on more than 16 different online platforms.

This achievement is particularly noteworthy considering the company was established 11 years ago with a $50,000 investment from BLH Venture Partners, an Atlanta-based investment company created by Billy L. Harbert and Ashish Mistry. Mistry previously co-founded Virtex Networks and was an initial team member at Air Defense.

Although neither Harbert nor Mistry were avid gamers themselves, they recognized the potential in providing products to those who were, as Mistry explained in a message.

“Significant markets contain substantial specialized areas,” Mistry stated.

Through the acquisition of KontrolFreek, SteelSeries is strengthening its presence in the console gaming sector by integrating a prominent vendor of enhanced controller accessories into its existing product range. Previously this year, SteelSeries acquired A-volute, a provider of three-dimensional audio systems for gaming.

SteelSeries will also benefit from KontrolFreek’s active online community, FreekNation, which has a membership of 4 million users.

“As the gaming world focuses on the latest generation of consoles, now is the ideal moment to enhance our capacity to deliver exceptional gaming experiences and products to console players,” commented Ehtisham Rabbani, CEO of SteelSeries. “We are confident that KontrolFreek’s knowledge and widespread appeal will create new avenues to engage, satisfy, and support gamers globally.”
