astrohaus Launches New Mechanical Keyboard for Writers

Astrohaus and the Pursuit of Distraction-Free Writing
Astrohaus has successfully established itself in a unique market segment. This startup, located in Michigan, specializes in creating hardware designed for writers who seek to minimize interruptions. The prevalence of platforms like Instagram can undeniably hinder the completion of lengthy writing projects.
Despite generally opposing prevailing technological trends, Astrohaus’s newest product leverages a current surge in popularity. Unveiled at CES 2025, the Wordrunner integrates into the growing mechanical keyboard community while remaining consistent with the company’s core principle of providing a distraction-free writing experience.
Introducing the Freewrite Wordrunner
The Freewrite Wordrunner functions fundamentally as a conventional mechanical keyboard, but incorporates several features specifically tailored to writers. These include a Wordometer – displaying the current word count – and a “sprint timer” to facilitate focused writing sessions.
The core concept is to integrate productivity tools directly into the hardware. Astrohaus aims to provide a method of circumventing writing applications and concentrating solely on the act of writing itself.
According to founder and CEO Adam Leeb, “Writers represent a significant user base for keyboards, yet dedicated, professional-grade tools have historically been unavailable to them.” He further explains, “While the gaming community benefits from a dedicated industry focused on specialized features, writers have been compelled to utilize general-purpose keyboards and supplementary software for tracking their progress.
Wordrunner: A New Approach
Wordrunner fundamentally alters this dynamic by transforming the keyboard into an active component of the writing workflow. It’s designed to be more than a simple input device; it’s intended to function as a genuine writing companion.”
The keyboard’s construction features an aluminum frame, floating keycaps, and a distinctive red control knob. A Kickstarter campaign is scheduled to launch in February, with anticipated product shipments beginning in late 2025.
The device offers a streamlined approach to writing, focusing on core functionality. It’s a deliberate move away from feature-rich software and towards a more tactile, focused experience.
