CES Organizers Stand Firm Amid Omicron Concerns

The Shifting Landscape of MWC and CES
The current situation bears a resemblance to the lead-up to Mobile World Congress (MWC). However, circumstances have unfolded differently compared to the originally planned 2020 event in Barcelona. This divergence stems from the fact that, at that time, the pandemic was largely an unknown entity.
Early Responses to the Pandemic
CES 2020 narrowly preceded widespread global lockdowns. The organizers of the 2021 show, the CTA, wisely transitioned to a fully virtual format to mitigate risks.
CES 2022 was initially slated for a return, though envisioned as a hybrid event with reduced in-person attendance for many participants.
Omicron and Rising Concerns
Recent cancellations haven’t reached the scale seen in Barcelona, but the rapid spread of the omicron variant presents a significant threat to event organizers. A likely surge in travel-related cases during the holidays, coupled with the unpredictable nature of Las Vegas – where navigating the Strip often involves passing through casinos – contributes to growing anxieties.
Travel restrictions imposed by nations like Israel have further complicated matters.
CTA's Stance and Initial Cancellations
Despite these challenges, the CTA maintains its commitment to proceeding with the show as scheduled. They report that exhibitor cancellations currently account for 7% of the floor space, while simultaneously adding new participants.
T-Mobile was the first major sponsor to withdraw its in-person presence, continuing financial support but reducing its team’s attendance. CEO Mike Sievert will no longer deliver a keynote address, either in person or virtually.
Interestingly, the band Weezer will still perform a free concert on the Strip with T-Mobile’s sponsorship. Rivers Cuomo stated their excitement about returning to Las Vegas and participating in the Drone Racing League’s championship race.
iHeartRadio, however, canceled a planned performance by Swedish House Mafia.
Further Withdrawals from Major Companies
Meta, Twitter, Amazon, and Pinterest have since announced their withdrawal. While these are prominent companies, they haven’t traditionally maintained a substantial presence at the show.
Media Outlets Adjusting Coverage Plans
Several media outlets, including The Verge, CNET, Engadget, PCMag, Gizmodo, Tom’s Guide, and TechRadar, have decided not to send teams to CES. Despite the increasing shift towards online conferences, these publications still recognize the value of events like CES.
A key benefit is the opportunity to discover new startups in person at Eureka Park, companies that might otherwise struggle to gain visibility amidst the constant flow of information.
The Venetian Expo Hall has historically been a valuable location for discovering emerging companies, and there was anticipation for a return to in-person exploration.
Lessons from the Virtual CES 2021
CES 2021 served as a test case for an entirely online hardware show. The experience was deemed premature, particularly regarding discovery – a crucial element of these events.
A robust online presence is essential for the 2022 show, regardless of the extent of in-person participation. Many teams are already planning remote coverage, and are considering how the show will be covered in the future, should the pandemic eventually subside.
Health Protocols and Ongoing Monitoring
The CTA has consistently reaffirmed its commitment to holding the show, implementing new health protocols. These include proof of vaccination, mandatory masks, free rapid testing kits, and a requirement for a recent negative test prior to entry.
The CES social media channels are currently showcasing images of the Las Vegas Convention Center and announcing new speakers, including Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and Paris Hilton, who will participate in a panel discussion titled “NFT, WTF?!?!”
Companies Evaluating Their Participation
Companies like Google, HTC, John Deere, TCL, and BMW are “continuing to monitor the situation.” Nvidia has opted for a cautious approach, planning a virtual press conference and foregoing an exhibitor space.
