macOS Big Sur Release Date: November 12th - Apple News

Apple revealed today that its next-generation desktop and laptop operating system, macOS Big Sur, will become available on November 12th.

Continuing the company’s tradition of naming releases after Californian landmarks, macOS Big Sur introduces a modernized user interface alongside a variety of new functionalities and enhanced system performance.

Several enhancements initially introduced in iOS 14 will be integrated into macOS Big Sur, such as enhanced Message conversations with improved threading and the ability to respond directly within message streams, as well as a completely redesigned Maps application. The latest Apple operating system also features an updated Control Center, providing convenient access to settings like screen brightness, sound volume, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

The Safari browser has received significant updates as well. These include strengthened privacy and security protocols, featuring intelligent tracking prevention to block cross-site trackers and a password monitoring system designed to alert users to compromised credentials.

For those interested in a firsthand experience with macOS Big Sur, TechCrunch’s Brian Heater previously evaluated the new software in August.

macOS Big Sur will be compatible with a wide range of Apple computers, including Macs and MacBooks released from 2013 onwards.
