Apple Watch Detects Bike Workouts & Falls - New Feature

New Cycling Features Arrive for Apple Watch

Bike riders utilizing the Apple Watch are set to benefit from a suite of newly implemented functionalities. These enhancements were unveiled during the recent Apple iPhone presentation. The Apple Watch is now capable of recognizing the commencement of a bicycle ride, prompting users to initiate workout tracking.

Automatic Workout Management

Functioning similarly to other workout types, the Apple Watch will automatically pause and resume activity recording during breaks taken throughout a ride. This ensures accurate tracking without manual intervention.

Enhanced Fall Detection for Cyclists

A particularly significant addition is a new fall-detection capability. This feature is designed specifically for cycling scenarios.

While existing Apple Watch models (Series 4 and later) already offer fall detection, the updated system can now differentiate between a fall while standing and a fall occurring during a bike ride. It analyzes the distinct motion and impact characteristics of cycling accidents.

Improved E-Bike Support

The Apple Watch now provides enhanced support for electric bicycles. An improved workout algorithm has been integrated to more precisely calculate calorie expenditure during e-bike rides.

Integration with watchOS 8

These new features complement existing functionalities, such as the redesigned Breathe app, fresh watch faces, and updates to Messages and Photos, all delivered through watchOS 8.

Apple Watch Series 7 Announcement

Alongside these software improvements, Apple also introduced the Apple Watch Series 7. This new model boasts a larger Retina display, interface refinements, a wider selection of watch faces and colors, faster charging capabilities, and overall performance enhancements.

Fitness+ Expansion

Updates to Apple’s Fitness+ subscription service were also announced. The service will now be accessible in 15 additional countries, expanding its reach beyond the initial six.

  • New Pilates workouts have been added to the Fitness+ library.
  • Guided meditation sessions are now available.
  • Workouts tailored for skiers and snowboarders have been incorporated.
