Apple to Expand Investment in German Operations
Apple has revealed plans for a significant increase in corporate expenditure within Germany. Specifically, the technology giant intends to establish a new facility in Munich, Germany.
New European Silicon Design Center
This new center, designated the European Silicon Design Center, will concentrate its efforts on the development of 5G technology and potentially, future generations of wireless communication standards.
Munich currently serves as Apple’s largest engineering center in Europe. A workforce of 1,500 engineers is already stationed there.
Focus on Chip Development
Apple has been actively building an internal team dedicated to the design and development of power management chips. Notably, half of Apple’s global power management engineering staff is based in Germany.
Over time, the scope of work for Apple’s German teams has broadened beyond power management to encompass a wider range of chip designs.
Significant Financial Commitment
The company intends to invest $1.2 billion (€1 billion) over the coming three years. This investment will be allocated to the construction of a new building and further research and development initiatives.
While currently collaborating with Qualcomm for 5G modems utilized in the iPhone 12 series, Apple previously acquired the majority of Intel’s smartphone modem business.
Integration of Hardware
Beyond internal chip development, Apple’s teams are also responsible for the integration of third-party hardware components into its product line, including the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.
Investment in the German Economy
Apple emphasized its substantial financial commitment to Germany as a whole. The company maintains partnerships with numerous German suppliers, including DELO, Infineon, and Varta.
Over the past five years, Apple’s spending with German companies has totaled $17.8 billion (€15 billion), benefiting 700 businesses.
New Building Rendering
The planned building, located on Karlstrasse in Munich, is anticipated to be completed and operational by late 2022.
