Apple Begins iPhone 12 Assembly in India - Latest News

iPhone 12 Assembly Commences in India
Apple has initiated the assembly process for the iPhone 12 within India, signifying an expansion of its manufacturing capabilities in the second-largest smartphone market globally.
This undertaking is being carried out by Foxconn, a key contract manufacturing partner to Apple. Currently, assembly is limited to the standard iPhone 12 model, with no other variants – such as the Pro, Pro Max, or Mini – being produced in the country at this time.
India as a Growing Production Hub
This development highlights India’s increasing prominence as a significant production center for major smartphone manufacturers. Companies including Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and OnePlus have been assembling their smartphone models in India for over five years.
These firms have consistently increased their production capacities within the region in recent years.
Government Incentives
The Indian government, New Delhi, has been actively attracting global technology companies by offering various tax benefits to those who establish local production facilities.
These incentives have been notably enhanced in recent quarters.
Minister Prasad's Vision
Last year, India’s IT Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad, expressed optimism regarding the development of a robust ecosystem across the entire value chain.
He stated the intention to integrate with global value chains, ultimately strengthening the electronics manufacturing ecosystem within the country.
Apple's History in Indian Manufacturing
Apple first began local assembly of select iPhone models in India in 2017, starting with the iPhone SE.
Initially, however, contract partners focused on producing older iPhone models within the country.
Production Shift to India
Estimates suggest that Apple intends to relocate between 7% and 10% of its total iPhone production to India.
This move is aimed at reducing the company’s dependence on China, though sources indicate this figure may be overstated.
Wistron Facility Incident and Recovery
Late last year, Apple experienced a disruption in India following a violent protest at a facility operated by Wistron, a crucial manufacturing partner, near Bangalore.
The Taiwanese firm has since addressed the issues and announced plans to rehire workers and resume production at the facility.
Apple's Official Statement
An Apple spokesperson in India released a statement affirming the company’s commitment to delivering exceptional products and services to its customers.
They expressed pride in initiating iPhone 12 production in India for the benefit of local consumers.
Market Share and Growth
Despite holding only a 2% share of the Indian smartphone market, Apple has demonstrated substantial growth in recent quarters.
The company shipped over 1.5 million iPhone units in India during the quarter ending in December, representing a 100% year-on-year increase and marking its strongest quarter to date in the world’s largest smartphone market.
Apple's Unique Strategy
Unlike many foreign companies that prioritize affordability in the Indian market, Apple has concentrated on serving a smaller segment of the population capable of affording premium-priced products, according to Jayanth Kolla, chief analyst at Convergence Catalyst.
Despite a slow initial uptake, Apple has successfully established a growing presence within this niche market.
