apple’s new ‘intercom’ feature will let you shout across your apple devices

Apple has unveiled a new capability for its HomePod line of speakers, including the recently released HomePod Mini, called Intercom. Functioning in a similar way to the “announce” function on Alexa, Intercom enables HomePod users to utilize their smart speakers – and other Apple products – to instantly communicate with all household members.

This feature will be particularly beneficial for families who are already invested in the Apple product range, as Intercom is compatible across iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, and even CarPlay.

As demonstrated by Apple, a parent could, for instance, use an Apple device to announce dinnertime from one part of the house, and the message will be delivered to family members throughout the home, who can then respond using their closest Apple device.

To initiate an Intercom message, users simply state “Hey Siri, tell everyone…” followed by their desired message. Recipients can then respond by saying “Hey Siri, reply…” to send their answer.

From a technical standpoint, the communication isn’t a direct broadcast to all devices. Apple explains that Intercom messages will be played through HomePod speakers within the home and on connected AirPods, while alerts will be displayed on individual devices.

Apple’s strength in integrating its complete ecosystem could give it an edge over competitors like Amazon and Google in the smart speaker market, despite the fact that those companies already provide similar announcement features on their own smart speakers and displays.

The affordability of the new HomePod Mini, priced at $99, will broaden its appeal to more customers. Apple’s commitment to user privacy in handling voice data may also influence consumer purchasing decisions.

Update: As of now, Intercom functionality with Mac devices has not been officially confirmed.
