New MacBook Pro: Redesign, Magsafe & Latest Chips

Apple Unveils Redesigned MacBook Pro Line
Less than a year following the introduction of the initial Apple silicon-equipped MacBook Pro, the company is now releasing a subsequent iteration.
The 2020 professional laptop model presented some ambiguity in its positioning, particularly concerning the distinctions between the M1-powered Pro and Air versions.
New Chips: M1 Pro and M1 Max
Today’s announcement aims to address this. Apple has launched a new MacBook Pro version that establishes a more defined separation from its lightweight, thin-and-light counterpart.
These new systems are powered by the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, enhanced versions of those revealed earlier today. The 10-core chip offers up to three times the memory bandwidth of the original M1, alongside a 16-core GPU.
The Max configuration further elevates the GPU to 32 cores. It’s evident that Apple is specifically targeting creative professionals with these updated models.
Redesign and Key Features
In contrast to the previous year’s model, the new MacBook Pros, available in 14- and 16-inch sizes, boast a completely new design.
They also incorporate dedicated fans for demanding applications, although Apple asserts these will operate infrequently. The update also signifies the discontinuation of the Touch Bar, replaced by traditional function keys.
A beloved feature makes a return: MagSafe. The third-generation charger utilizes a proprietary port, but charging remains possible through the Thunderbolt/USB-C ports.
The new models also offer a wider array of ports, including three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI port, and an SDXC card slot.
Display and Webcam Improvements
The display bezels have been minimized, incorporating an iPhone-inspired notch to accommodate the webcam.
The webcam itself has been upgraded to 1080p for improved video conferencing, featuring a larger sensor and wider aperture – a significant improvement over previous iterations.
The 16-inch model (actually 16.2 inches) features a 3456 x 2240 resolution, while the 14-inch model is 3024 x 1964. Peak brightness reaches 1600 nits, and the refresh rate is 120 Hz.
The new screens are complemented by substantially enhanced audio. Grilles covering a significant portion of the surface house a six-speaker system, comprising four woofers and two tweeters.
Battery Life, Weight, and Pricing
These systems support faster charging and offer improved battery life, providing up to 21 hours of video playback according to Apple’s estimates.
However, the performance comes with some weight. The 14-inch model weighs 3.5 pounds, while the 16-inch model is 4.7 pounds.
The 14-inch model starts at $1,999, and the 16-inch model begins at $2,499. Upgrading to the M1 Max chip adds $200 for the 24-core GPU and $400 for the 36-core version.
Pre-orders are open today, with shipping commencing next week. The 13-inch MacBook Pro will remain available, now occupying the position previously held by the standard MacBook.
