Apple Announces Further Executive Departures and New Appointments

A series of leadership changes is underway at Apple. Following the recent announcements regarding AI chief John Giannandrea and design executive Alan Dye’s move to Meta, the company has revealed the upcoming retirements of two further executives.

Executive Retirements

Kate Adams, Apple’s general counsel since 2017, is set to retire by the end of next year. Simultaneously, Lisa Jackson, currently Apple’s vice president for Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, will be retiring in late January 2026.

New General Counsel Appointed

Jennifer Newstead has been recruited to assume the role of general counsel, effective March 1, 2026. She will report directly to chief executive Tim Cook, following a period of transition with Adams.

Newstead’s Extensive Background

Prior to joining Apple, Newstead served as chief legal officer at Meta. Her experience also includes a significant period as the legal adviser to the U.S. Department of State, where she guided the secretary of state on legal matters pertaining to U.S. foreign policy.

Previous Government Roles

Newstead’s career encompasses several other key government positions. These include serving as general counsel of the White House Office of Management and Budget, as a principal deputy assistant attorney general within the Department of Justice, and as associate White House counsel.

Furthermore, she completed a law clerkship with Justice Stephen Breyer of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Expanded Responsibilities for New General Counsel

According to Cook, Newstead will be responsible for overseeing both the Legal and Government Affairs organizations within Apple.

Jackson’s Contributions to Sustainability and DEI

Lisa Jackson, who previously held a position at the EPA before joining Apple in 2013, played a pivotal role in the company’s climate initiatives and sustainability programs. She also led efforts related to environmental impact and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), such as the Racial Equity and Justice Initiative.

Recent Leadership Shifts at Apple

Apple has experienced several leadership changes in recent months. Jeff Williams, the former chief operating officer, announced his departure in July, with his responsibilities transitioning to Sabih Khan, previously the senior vice president of operations.

Changes in AI Leadership

Prior to Giannandrea’s departure, Mike Rockwell was appointed to lead the Siri team, having previously served as VP of the Vision Products Group.

Loss of AI Talent to Meta

The company also saw Ke Yang, the executive responsible for AI-driven web search, and Ruoming Pang, Apple’s former head of AI models, both leave for Meta earlier in the year.

Apple’s Position in the AI Landscape

These leadership changes occur as Apple navigates challenges in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. The launch of an AI-powered Siri has been delayed, and the updated version will initially utilize Google’s models. Concerns have also been raised regarding a perceived decline in Apple’s attention to design detail.
