Apple Releases Tracker Detect Android App - Find Nearby AirTags
Apple Releases Tracker Detect App for Android
In a move to enhance user privacy, Apple has made available a new Android application, Tracker Detect. This app is designed to assist individuals who do not utilize Apple products in identifying potentially unwanted AirTags in their vicinity.
How Tracker Detect Works
Should a user suspect they are being tracked, the application allows them to scan for nearby AirTags. Any detected AirTag that isn’t recognized will be identified as an “unknown AirTag.”
If an unidentified item tracker is determined to be moving with a user for a duration exceeding 10 minutes, the app will enable the user to trigger an audible alert from the tracker. This feature aids in locating the device.
Following sound activation, users will receive guidance on obtaining further information about the tracker and instructions on how to deactivate it, typically through battery removal.
App Description and Compatibility
According to the app’s official description, Tracker Detect specifically searches for item trackers that have become separated from their registered owner and are compatible with Apple’s Find My network.
This includes both AirTags and compatible devices manufactured by other companies. The app is intended for use by individuals who believe they may be subject to unwanted tracking via such devices.
Currently, the app supports item trackers integrated with the Find My network, such as Apple’s AirTag and the Chipolo ONE Spot. It does not, however, function with trackers that are not compatible with this network, like those produced by Tile.
Limitations of the App
It’s important to note that Tracker Detect cannot identify AirTags that are already associated with an Apple account. Consequently, it cannot be used to fully leverage the capabilities of the AirTag system.
Apple’s Statement
A spokesperson for Apple confirmed the app’s launch to TechCrunch, stating that AirTag provides leading privacy and security features. They further explained that Tracker Detect extends these capabilities to Android users.
The app empowers Android users to scan for AirTags or other Find My-enabled trackers that may be traveling with them without their knowledge.
Since its release, the Tracker Detect app has received a significant number of negative reviews on the Google Play Store. A common complaint is the lack of automated detection, with users suggesting a feature that automatically scans for unknown AirTags.
Some users have also reported that the app has been unable to detect AirTags within their homes. It is crucial to remember that an AirTag must be separated from its paired device for at least 10 minutes before Tracker Detect can identify and alert the user.
Apple has been contacted by TechCrunch for comment regarding these user reports.
Addressing Stalking Concerns
The release of Tracker Detect comes in response to growing concerns about the potential misuse of AirTags for stalking purposes. Their small size allows for discreet placement, raising privacy issues.
A report published by The Washington Post highlighted how AirTags could facilitate surreptitious tracking, while numerous other reports have alleged their use in secret surveillance.
Apple’s Response and Updates
In response to these concerns, Apple adjusted the timeframe before a lost AirTag emits an audible alert. Initially set at three days, the delay was randomized to a period between 8 and 24 hours.
Furthermore, iPhones now display an “Item Detected Near You” notification when an unknown AirTag is detected, providing iOS users with a built-in tracking alert without requiring a separate application.
Expanding Anti-Stalking Measures
Recognizing the need to extend these protections to Android users, Apple announced plans to develop an Android app for detecting potentially unwanted AirTags.
Industry Leadership
Apple’s support for tracker scanning positions the company as a leader in anti-stalking functionality. Competitor Tile has announced plans to implement a similar manual scan feature within its own app, expected to launch in early 2022.
AirTag Pricing and Technology
Apple launched AirTag in April. The devices are available for $29 individually or $99 for a four-pack. They utilize Apple’s U1 ultra-wideband chip for “Precision Finding” and also incorporate Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology.
