Apple Issues Critical Security Updates for its Devices

Apple has recently made available a series of security enhancements for its product line, encompassing iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Watches. These updates do not introduce any new functionalities, however, installation is strongly advised.

Software Version Updates

The security improvements manifest as updates to several operating systems. iPhones and iPads will receive iOS and iPadOS 14.4.1, respectively. watchOS users can upgrade to version 7.3.2, while macOS Big Sur will be updated to 11.2.3.

Users operating older macOS versions are also able to install the newest iteration of Safari, specifically version 14.0.3.

Importance of Installation

Apple designates these releases as “important” security updates and recommends that all users install them promptly.

Details of the Security Fix

These patches address a shared vulnerability: a memory corruption flaw within WebKit, the browser engine at the core of Apple’s Safari. This flaw is triggered when a user visits a compromised website containing exploitable code.

Successful exploitation allows an attacker to execute malicious code on the impacted Apple device.

Vulnerability Discovery

The vulnerability was identified and reported by both Google and Microsoft. Currently, it is not believed to be under active exploitation by malicious actors, unlike some recent security issues.

Recent WebKit Exploitation

Just last month, Apple released iOS 14.4 to remediate three WebKit vulnerabilities that were, in fact, being actively exploited. These vulnerabilities were combined in an attempt to compromise the core software of iPhones.

Recommendation

It is highly recommended to update your devices at the earliest opportunity.
