Apple MagSafe Duo Charger Review: Is It Worth It?

Apple MagSafe Duo Charger Review: Is It Worth It?

Alongside the introduction of the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max, I had the opportunity to evaluate Apple’s new MagSafe Duo Charger. This is a foldable, double-sided charging solution designed for travel, capable of powering both an iPhone with MagSafe technology and an Apple Watch using its conventional magnetic charging system.

It functions as intended, performing precisely as advertised. An iPhone will securely attach to the MagSafe portion of the charger, aligning through the integrated magnets. The Apple Watch side extends upwards to provide convenient access for bands with a closed loop design. The entire unit folds for portability and can even fold in reverse if only one side is needed. It undeniably works.

Considering its price point of $129, the build quality feels more akin to a $70 product. The omission of a power adapter – a necessary component – is notable, and could easily lead one to reassess its value, perhaps down to around $40. The charger does include a Lightning to USB-C cable, which assumes the user already possesses a USB-C power source, a situation that isn’t yet universal. Nevertheless, the Lightning port on the charger itself maintains compatibility with existing Lightning charging cables.

While the hinge operates correctly, it exhibits some wobble and shows visible creasing upon use. The rubber is sufficiently thick to prevent immediate tearing, but it doesn’t inspire a great deal of confidence. This type of hinge construction is typically found in more affordable, third-party accessories, rather than products from Apple.

A basic seal is present, but the underlying layers of lamination are visible upon close inspection. This design appears susceptible to scratches, fraying, bending, and dirt accumulation – undesirable characteristics for a portable device.

The color white is also a questionable choice; my unit is already showing signs of discoloration despite not being used for travel yet.

The Apple Watch charging component feels the most refined, featuring a sleek, chrome hinge. Both the MagSafe pad and Watch charger are constructed from Apple’s characteristically polished aluminum, and the unit possesses a substantial weight. I was unable to verify whether it can simultaneously fast charge an Apple Watch and iPhone when used with the 20W power adapter, but I intend to update this review with that information if possible.

Of course, the magnetic connection on the iPhone side provides the benefit of easily lifting the phone when attached, though this is less convenient with the larger charger unit compared to a slim MagSafe puck. It might be useful for a quick time check in a hotel room, for example.

However, I must admit that the overall experience feels somewhat disappointing, especially considering the anticipation surrounding AirPower and its eventual cancellation. It’s possible Apple had this product in development during the AirPower project, but the outcome feels anticlimactic.

The MagSafe Duo Charger does function correctly, and it has a few commendable engineering aspects. However, the combined cost of the $129 charger and the $19 20W power adapter doesn’t justify the price, and numerous third-party alternatives offer similar functionality.
