iOS 15 Beta Released: First Look at Apple's New Mobile OS

A First Look at Apple's Upcoming Operating Systems

The future of iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS is now accessible. Apple has recently launched the initial public beta versions of iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and watchOS 8.

Next-Generation Operating Systems

These releases represent the subsequent significant iterations of the operating systems powering the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. Unlike betas intended for developers, these versions are available to all users, eliminating the need for a $99 developer account.

However, it’s crucial to remember that these are beta releases.

Beta Release Schedule

The final versions of iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and watchOS 8 are still slated for release this fall. Apple intends to distribute betas periodically throughout the summer.

This strategy allows for the identification and resolution of as many software defects as possible, alongside the collection of valuable data from a broad user base.

Alignment with Developer Betas

As is typical, Apple’s public betas closely mirror the release schedule of its developer betas. A second developer beta for iOS and iPadOS 15 was also made available today.

Consequently, the initial public beta appears to be largely equivalent to the second developer build.

Important Considerations Before Installing

Installing a beta version on a primary iPhone or iPad is strongly discouraged. Issues extend beyond simple bugs; certain applications and functionalities may be entirely non-operational.

In rare instances, beta software can render a device unusable, potentially leading to data loss, even on iCloud. Exercise extreme caution before proceeding.

How to Download the Beta

If you possess a spare iPad, iPhone, or Apple Watch, you can download the beta as follows: Visit Apple’s beta website from the device intended for testing.

Download the configuration profile – for watchOS betas, this is done through your iPhone. This small file instructs your device to seek updates as it would with standard software releases.

Post-Installation and Final Release

After installation, restart your device and navigate to the Settings (or Watch) app. An update should then be visible.

In September, your device should automatically transition to the final version of iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or watchOS 8, at which point the configuration profile can be removed.

Key Feature: Focus Mode

The most significant addition in iOS 15 is the introduction of Focus mode. Beyond the existing “Do Not Disturb” function, users can now customize various modes.

This allows for selective notification filtering, choosing which apps and contacts can reach you based on your current activity. Examples include Work, Sleep, and Workout modes.

Additional New Features

Numerous enhancements are included across the board, such as a redesigned Weather app, updated maps within Apple Maps, and an improved FaceTime experience featuring SharePlay.

Safari also boasts a completely new visual design.
