Apple Brings Shortcuts to Mac, Replacing Automator

macOS Monterey to Introduce iOS-Style Shortcuts
At WWDC 2021, Apple unveiled macOS Monterey, the forthcoming iteration of its desktop operating system. A key addition will be the arrival of the Shortcuts application for macOS. This new app is designed to mirror the functionality and user experience found in the iOS and iPadOS versions.
A History of Automation on Apple Platforms
Craig Federighi, SVP of Software Engineering, highlighted Apple’s longstanding commitment to automation. He noted the Mac’s established tools like command line, shell scripts, AppleScript, and Automator. Previously, automation on iOS was simplified with the introduction of Shortcuts.
“This year, we are extending Shortcuts to the Mac,” Federighi stated, signaling a unified approach to automation across Apple’s ecosystem.
Functionality and Triggering Shortcuts
The new Shortcuts app will feature a gallery showcasing a variety of pre-built shortcuts. Users can anticipate the ability to perform actions such as launching applications, generating GIFs, composing and sending messages, creating emails, and opening websites.
Shortcuts can be initiated from multiple locations within the macOS environment. These include the Finder’s right column, the menu bar, and through Spotlight search. Furthermore, integration with Siri will allow for voice-activated shortcut execution.
The Future of Automation and Automator
This announcement also suggests a shift away from Automator, Apple’s previous automation tool. Federighi indicated a “multi-year transition,” with Automator continuing to receive support for the time being.
Existing Automator workflows will be importable into the new Shortcuts application, facilitating a smooth transition for users.
A Clear Direction for Apple’s Automation Strategy
Reading between the lines, it appears Apple is prioritizing development efforts on Shortcuts. New features are unlikely to be added to Automator. Shortcuts is positioned as the central automation solution for macOS, iOS, and iPadOS moving forward.
