apple fitness+ is adding airplay casting

Just one week following the launch of Time to Walk, Apple has issued a further software update designed to broaden the reach of its Fitness+ service. The release of the developer seed for watchOS 7.4 and iOS 14.5 today introduces a new capability: the ability to broadcast workouts to a television utilizing AirPlay – though with certain limitations.

Subscribers can now transmit both the audio and video components of the fitness application to televisions supporting AirPlay 2. This is a welcome enhancement for individuals who do not own an Apple TV, and also for those who wish to utilize the service while traveling, for example, through compatible hotel television sets (as travel resumes).

A key distinction is that performance data will not be shown on the television screen. This means that metrics such as activity rings and calorie expenditure will not be visible. Users will need to consult their paired Apple Watch or iPhone/iPad to access this information. While not a critical drawback, these metrics are a significant element of the Fitness+ experience. Apple likely aims to encourage continued investment in its own hardware while simultaneously expanding the user base of the fitness application.

Fitness+ debuted at an opportune moment for Apple, coinciding with the widespread shift to home-based exercise routines prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting cancellation of many gym memberships. The long-term viability of at-home workouts remains a question, particularly with the increasing availability of vaccines.

Sustaining and expanding these applications will necessitate adaptability. During a discussion with Apple representatives last week regarding Fitness+, the company expressed its vision of users accessing the app in various locations. This could involve completing a Fitness+ workout on an iPad at a fitness center or incorporating the experience into travel plans.

This functionality is presently accessible within the developer seeds of the latest watchOS and iOS iterations and is anticipated to become available to all users upon the official release of the final versions.
