Apple Debuts New True Crime Podcast ‘Hooked’

Apple Expands Original Podcast Offerings with “Hooked”
Apple is demonstrating a continued commitment to original podcast content with the release of “Hooked,” a new true crime podcast. This nine-part series delves into the remarkable story of Tony Hathaway, a highly skilled engineer whose struggle with opioid addiction ultimately led him to become a notorious bank robber within the United States.
Podcast Production and Interviews
“Hooked” is a production of Campside Media, spearheaded by its co-founder, Josh Dean, who serves as the host. The podcast incorporates interviews gathered over a period of three years, featuring perspectives from Hathaway himself, his family members, law enforcement officials, and other individuals connected to the case.
A Standalone Original
Notably, “Hooked” distinguishes itself from other Apple TV+ podcasts by existing as a standalone production. It is not directly linked to any existing or announced Apple TV+ series or film.
Companion Podcasts to Apple TV+ Programming
Previously, Apple TV+ branded podcasts primarily functioned as supplementary content for its original video programs. Examples include “The Line,” which accompanies a forthcoming warfare documentary, as well as podcasts dedicated to “For All Mankind” and “Foundation.” “The Problem With Jon Stewart: The Official Podcast” also falls into this category.
Previous Podcast Experiments
This isn’t Apple’s initial foray into standalone podcasting. Last year saw the launch of “The Zane Lowe Interview Series,” a music-focused podcast featuring conversations with prominent artists.
Early Podcast Ventures
Prior to this, Apple utilized the podcasting format to disseminate corporate information, such as keynote presentations, earnings reports, and Apple Store events. The company also distributed its 2019 Grammy’s Celebration via podcast, following its initial livestream on Beats 1.
Development and Creative Oversight
Although produced by Campside Media, the development of “Hooked” was overseen by the creative team at Apple TV+, explaining the platform’s credit alongside the media company.
Potential for Future Originals
The introduction of a standalone podcast within the popular true crime genre suggests Apple may be evaluating the potential for additional original content not necessarily tied to its existing platforms, like Apple TV+ or Apple Music.
Widespread Accessibility
Unlike some original podcasts from competitors like Spotify, “Hooked” is not exclusive to the Apple Podcasts app. Listeners have the flexibility to access the episodes through their preferred podcast application.
Availability Across Platforms
The podcast is available through Apple Podcasts and via RSS feeds. Apple Podcasts itself is accessible in over 170 countries and regions, supporting more than 100 languages, and is compatible with a wide range of Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.
Third-Party App Support
The RSS feed allows for streaming via third-party podcast apps such as Pocket Casts, Overcast, Castbox, and Podbean.
Release Schedule
The first three episodes of “Hooked” are currently available, with subsequent episodes being released on a weekly basis every Wednesday.
