Apple Introduces New iMac and Enhanced Accessories

Today, Apple announced a redesigned iMac featuring a vibrant array of colors and powered by the Apple-designed M1 chip. Alongside this launch, the company expanded its ecosystem of Mac accessories.

New Mac Accessories Unveiled

The product lineup now includes updated Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse options, available in a variety of colors. Notably, Apple is introducing Touch ID functionality to desktop Macs with a newly designed Magic Keyboard.

Touch ID Comes to Desktop

The desktop Touch ID implementation functions as users would expect. A fingerprint sensor is strategically positioned in the upper right corner of the keyboard. This sensor effectively replaces the traditional ‘Eject’ key found on previous Apple keyboard models.

With this new feature, users can effortlessly unlock their Mac, authorize purchases via Apple Pay, and access password managers with enhanced security.

Wireless and Secure Operation

A key aspect of this Touch ID integration is its wireless capability. The keyboard does not require a wired connection via Lightning cable to function.

A dedicated security element is integrated directly into the keyboard’s hardware. This component establishes a direct communication link with the Secure Enclave within the M1 chip. Consequently, compatibility is limited to newer Macs equipped with an M1 chip.

The security architecture behind this implementation of Touch ID is particularly noteworthy and warrants further examination.

Availability and Options

When purchasing a new iMac, customers will have a choice of three distinct keyboard models. It is anticipated that not all iMac configurations will include Touch ID as a standard feature.

Separate availability of the new keyboard is expected, though pricing details will be revealed following the conclusion of the launch event.
