Apna Secures $12.5 Million in New Funding

A startup founded by a former Apple employee, now serving millions of India’s workforce in various trades, announced Tuesday that it has received an additional $12.5 million in funding. This investment follows a previous $8 million round secured just five months prior from prominent investors.

Series A Extension Led by Sequoia Capital and Greenoaks Capital

Apna, which translates to “ours” in Hindi, has garnered over $20 million in total funding. The latest $12.5 million investment was spearheaded by Sequoia Capital India and Greenoaks Capital. Lightspeed India and Rocketship VC, existing investors, also contributed to this extended Series A round.

Platform Connects Over 6 Million Workers

The platform currently supports more than 6 million workers, including drivers, delivery staff, electricians, and beauticians. These individuals utilize Apna to locate employment opportunities and enhance their skill sets.

Peer-to-Peer Support and Knowledge Sharing

Analysis of the platform reveals a strong community aspect. Workers actively assist each other by sharing advice and best practices. For example, beauticians exchange techniques to improve customer satisfaction, and individuals share strategies for negotiating salary increases.

Focus on Networking and Opportunity

“Our primary objective is to establish a network specifically for these workers,” explained Nirmit Parikh, Apna’s founder and CEO, in a recent interview. “Addressing the networking gap unlocks a greater number of opportunities for individuals.” Harshjit Sethi, a principal at Sequoia India, highlighted Apna’s progress in “constructing a professional social network tailored for India.”

Attracting Major Recruiters

Apna has become a desirable platform for large companies seeking to hire. Recruiters from Amazon, Flipkart, Unacademy, Byju’s, Swiggy, BigBasket, Dunzo, BlueStar, and Grofers are actively using Apna to connect with potential employees. The app facilitates a streamlined onboarding process, supporting multiple local languages, and allows users to create a digital business card for recruiters.

AI-Powered Candidate Matching

Parikh stated that Apna’s AI technology understands cultural nuances, enabling recruiters to identify the most suitable candidates for their specific requirements.

Rapid Growth and High Retention

Over the past six months, Apna has experienced significant growth. The Android app had 1.2 million users in August of the previous year. During this period, over 60 million interactions occurred between recruiters and applicants. The platform boasts a retention rate exceeding 95% and has attracted more than 80,000 employers.

Upskilling with Accountability

“Apna’s jobs-focused approach to upskilling is particularly exciting,” said Vaibhav Agrawal, partner at Lightspeed India. “The lack of accountability has been a major issue with existing skill development programs for blue and grey-collar workers. Apna addresses this by creating positive job outcomes for those who participate in upskilling initiatives.”

Parikh conceived the idea for Apna after observing the difficulties his family and friends encountered when attempting to hire workers in India. Despite a large workforce, he realized a scalable networking infrastructure was missing to effectively connect workers with employers.

Deep Understanding of Worker Needs

Prior to launching the startup, Parikh engaged directly with workers, even working undercover as an electrician and floor manager to gain firsthand insight into their challenges. This ongoing research continues, with the startup regularly communicating with over 15,000 users daily.

Expanding Beyond Job Matching

“We discovered that users were struggling with interview preparation, so we created practice groups. We also began offering upskilling courses, positioning us as an edtech provider,” Parikh explained. “We intend to expand these efforts in the coming months.” He previously founded an AI firm focused on electricity flux and another startup addressing information overload, which was later acquired by Intel.

Global Ambitions

Parikh expressed his gratitude for the positive response from customers and the industry. Users consistently share stories of securing employment or increasing their earnings. The startup has also attracted experienced executives from companies like Uber and BCG to help scale its vision. Parikh believes the problem Apna is solving in India is universal and aims to expand its services globally.

Monetization Strategy Focused on Value

Currently, the app is ad-free, and Parikh intends to maintain this approach. “Introducing advertising can lead to compromises,” he stated. The startup plans to generate revenue by charging recruiters and offering upskill courses, while continuing to provide basic courses to users free of charge. The premium courses will cater to those requiring more comprehensive assistance. The team is also planning to grow.

Addressing Unemployment in India

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in significant job losses in India, with millions of workers migrating home. With over 250 million blue and grey-collar workers in India, providing meaningful employment opportunities remains a substantial challenge, according to Sethi.
