Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hosted a live broadcast on Twitch last night, playing the game Among Us alongside several well-known streamers. The broadcast was organized to encourage voter participation in the upcoming general election and attracted a substantial audience.

The stream reached a peak of over 435,000 simultaneous viewers on AOC’s channel alone. Additional viewers were also watching on the Twitch channels of other participating streamers, including Pokimane, HasanAbi, and DrLupo, as they joined in the gameplay.

This level of viewership places AOC’s stream among the top five most-watched broadcasts on Twitch in terms of concurrent viewers. The current record for the highest viewership is held by Ninja’s Fortnite stream featuring Drake, which achieved over 600,000 simultaneous viewers.

Although Among Us was initially released several years ago, it has recently experienced a surge in popularity due to its adoption by numerous streamers. The game is relatively straightforward, yet provides an outlet for players to express their individual personalities.

The game functions as follows:

A group of between four and ten players enters a spaceship. Most of these players are designated as crewmates and are responsible for completing assigned tasks on the game map – these tasks consist of simple, puzzle-like mini-games. A smaller number of players are secretly assigned the role of impostors, whose objective is to sabotage the ship and eliminate crewmates. When a deceased crewmate is discovered and reported, the entire group engages in voice communication to debate and identify the potential impostor, resembling a murder mystery event integrated with a video game.

It is noteworthy that several politicians, including Representative Ilhan Omar, participated in a game that heavily relies on deception. AOC even acknowledged her apprehension prior to the start of the game, admitting her difficulty with dishonesty.

This initiative also highlights AOC’s previous efforts to connect with younger voters on platforms they frequently use. In May, the congresswoman appeared in Animal Crossing and visited players’ virtual islands.
